COLUMBIA, Mo. - No. 23 Missouri wrestling closes its five-match home stretch on Sunday, Jan. 26 at noon CT. The match will take place inside Mizzou Arena and can be streamed on UFC Fight Pass.
LAST TIME OUT
- Missouri secured a 21-15 win over Arizona State at home, marking its second consecutive win.
- Redshirt sophomore Kade Moore secured an upset win by major decision over No. 23 Julian Chlebove at 133 pounds.
- Also earning major decisions to help the Tigers pull away was redshirt junior Josh Edmond (141), who dominated Danial Miranda 17-8 and classmate Joel Mylin (174) who bumped up to best Javani Majoor 11-1.
- Making his return to the mat, redshirt sophomore Cam Steed won by injury default at 165 pounds over No. 17 Nicco Ruiz.
MOORE MAGIC
- Grabbing an upset win and the Outstanding Wrestler belt presented by UFC Fight Pass, Kade Moore bested No. 23 Julian Chlebove of Arizona State 13-3.
- The win marked Moore's first dual win of the season and his fifth bonus-point win of the season and second major decision.
FEED THE STEED
- Making his first start in Hearnes Center, Cam Steed did not disappoint, picking up the win at 165 pounds for Missouri.
- The redshirt sophomore was up 11-0 on No. 17 Nicco Ruiz of Arizona State in the first period before Ruiz was too injured to continue, giving Steed the win by injury default.
- The win marks Steed's ninth of the season as he comes in at No. 15 at 165 in the first round of NCAA Coaches Rankings.
MR. MYLIN
- Stepping in and stepping up for the team, redshirt junior Joel Mylin has filled in for the Tigers in the absence of Cam Steed and bumped up to 174 against Arizona State to help secure the win for the squad.
- This season, Mylin has wrestled tough against the top competition in the country at 165 and been within striking distance in each match: No. 30 Jack Thomsen (UNI), No. 5 Julian Ramirez (Cornell), No. 14 Hunter Garvin (Stanford) and No. 4 Terrell Barraclough.
- Weighing in at 165 but bumping up to 174 against Arizona State, Mylin earned an 11-1 major over Javani Majoor to help the Tigers pull away in the dual.
THE SERIES: WEST VIRGINIA
- The matchup between Missouri and West Virginia represents the fifth meeting between the two programs, with the Tigers holding a 4-0 advantage in the series.
- Tiger Style has outscored the Mountaineers 119-40 across the four series wins.
- The first match between the two took place during the 2003-04 season with Mizzou winning 22-15.
LAST TIME VS THE MOUNTAINEERS
- The Tigers secured a victory over West Virginia on January 26, 2024 with a dominant 30-6 performance, exactly one year from Sunday's showdown.
- Contributing to Missouri's win, three Tigers earned bonus points: Noah Surtin (125 - TF), Kade Moore (133 - Fall) and Brock Mauller (157 - MD).
- Additionally, Keegan O'Toole earned his fourth career win over No. 9 Peyton Hall by a come from behind 8-7 decision.
VALUABLE VETERANS
- Most recently, Tiger Style was forced to announce it will be without 184-pound starter and two-time NCAA qualifier Colton Hawks for the time being.
- Head coach Brian Smith announced that senior Rocky Elam, who has been combating multiple injuries, will not wrestle this season on Jan. 2
- Additionally, classmate Keegan O'Toole has been battling an injury sustained earlier in the season and will miss the month of January to allow him to recover as much as possible. Smith remains optimistic O'Toole will be ready for the postseason.
- Elam, O'Toole and Hawks join senior Noah Surtin as missing starters from the projected 2024-25 lineup, as he announced his medical retirement on Dec. 13, 2024.
- With their absence, the lineup is missing four wrestlers who have totaled 279 career wins and 152 bonus-point victories.
RANKINGS REPORT
- The Black and Gold are ranked No. 23 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Poll.
- Mizzou has six of 10 wrestlers ranked by InterMat and FloWrestling.
- Keegan O'Toole comes in at No. 3 on FloWrestling's pound-for-pound list and maintains his No. 1 ranking at 174 pounds.
- The Tigers have seven wrestlers ranked on the first NCAA Coaches rankings of the season.
HOMESTAND
- After wrestling on the road for the first half of the season, the Tigers enter a homestand, competing five times in Columbia in January.
