COLUMBIA, Mo. – Despite the first career goal for freshman Landis Canada, University of Missouri soccer (1-3-1) was unable to overtake Miami, falling, 2-1, Thursday night in Coral Gables, Florida.
Trailing 2-0 in the 69th minute, fellow freshman Emily Derucki launched a corner kick into the center of the box, Canada elevated above Hurricane (1-2-1) defenders and struck a header that bounced past the Miami goalkeeper.
With the deficit cut to one, the Tigers pressed, but could not find the equalizer in the contest.
The Hurricanes scored their goals in the 39th and 49th minute to earn the victory.
Early in the contest, the respective programs traded attack opportunities with neither side achieving a clean look at net.
In the 25th minute, Keegan Good intercepted a Miami pass and streaked up the center of the field. The junior midfielder fired a shot from deep that was placed wide left of the goal.
In the heart of the first half, Missouri increased its offensive pressure. Good struck a free kick that was deflected for a corner. Following the corner, the ball was exchanged back and forth in front of the net, but failed to find the foot of a Tiger.
Just over five minutes later the Hurricanes attack settled the ball at the top of the box and placed a turnaround shot in the bottom right corner of the net to open the scoring.
Following the break, Miami earned a free kick on the right side of the box in the 49th minute. The ball bounced in front of the net and was unable to be cleared by the Tigers before finding the back of the net.
Mizzou nearly found the goal in the 57th minute as senior midfielder Milena Fischer placed a low cross from the right side into the front center of the box. The ball found the head of Canada, but the freshman placed the ball off target on her first attempt.
The Tigers' attack led the Hurricanes 12 to six in shots and five to four in shots on goal.
