Baseball Drops Second-Straight Decision to No. 18 Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Behind a strong seven-inning mound effort from Jurrangelo Cijntje, No. 18 Mississippi State notched its second-straight victory over University of Missouri baseball with an 8-2 decision Friday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field.

Cijntje (8-1) permitted just two runs on three hits over 7.0 innings, striking out nine Tigers to earn his eighth victory of the season. The sophomore retired the first 10 Missouri hitters of the game, allowing his only two runs on solo shots by Trevor Austin in the fourth and Matt Garcia in the seventh en route to securing a Southeastern Conference series win for the Bulldogs (36-18, 17-12 SEC).

The two offenses traded solo home runs over the first three and a half innings, with MSU's Hunter Hines opening the scoring with a leadoff shot in the second, and Austin belting his 13th round-tripper of the season to even the score in the top of the fourth.

Hines ignited the Bulldogs' rally in the fourth, coaxing a one-out walk from Tigers starter Bryce Mayer (2-7), before back-to-back singles from Amani Larry and Logan Koehler produced the go-ahead run. MSU extended its lead to 3-1 on a Joe Powell sacrifice fly to left.

Mississippi State kept the pressure on the Tigers in the fifth, using a one-out Bryce Chance single and a pair of defensive miscues to set up a four-run rally. Dakota Jordan followed with one of his three hits on the day, driving in the first run of the inning with a double, and Larry delivered the biggest blow with a two-out, three-run homer to left to stretch the margin to 7-1.

Following Garcia's leadoff homer in the seventh, Larry struck again in the eighth, launching his second homer of the day — and third of the series — to make it a six-run affair once again.

Jordan and Larry combined to go 6-for-8 with five RBIs for the game to pace MSU's 10-hit attack. Brooks Auger closed out the victory with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief for the Bulldogs.

Garcia led the Tigers (22-32, 8-21 SEC) with a 2-for-4 day at the plate, while Mayer struck out four Bulldogs and scattered three runs on four hits allowed over 4.0 innings.
