Defensive tackle Keith Morrissey, a converted quarterback from Gallatin, Missouri, wreaked havoc in Mizzou's 20-7 win over #2 Alabama in a "Monday Night Football" game in Birmingham that opened the 1975 season. The sophomore had 10 tackles, nine of which were unassisted, four tackles for 30 yards in losses, a pass broken up and a forced fumble. ABC named him the defensive player of the game and Sports Illustrated tabbed him as national defensive player of the week.
This Month in Mizzou History
September 2022
Today, college football fans view the month of September as the traditional start of the football season. But it wasn't always that way. From 1890 to 1939, Missouri played only five times during September, with the schedule starting in earnest in the month of October.
Over the years, the Tigers have enjoyed success in September games, with an overall record of 134-95-4. Coach Gary Pinkel's Tiger teams went a perfect 19-0 in September games from 2006-2010.
Upset victories in the 1970s over #7 Arizona State, #2 Alabama, #8 USC, #2 Ohio State and #5 Notre Dame all transpired in September. Missouri regularly began playing 3-4 September games in 1970, and since 1996, Mizzou has occasionally played games in late August, too.
