COLUMBIA, Mo. — The University of Missouri Cross Country men were picked sixth while the women's roster was tabbed eighth in the Southeastern Conference preseason coaches poll released by the league office on Monday.
The rankings were a result of a vote by each of the league's head coaches.
Alabama took the top spot in each of the respective preseason polls. The Crimson Tide women finished third at the conference championships a season ago while the men came in fourth.
Last year's league champion Arkansas is slated to finish second in both the men's and women's standings.
Missouri will enter the 2022 season under new head coach Lindsey Anderson. Anderson, the 2021 National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Coach of the Year, arrived in the offseason after a five-year stint at College of Southern Idaho. She led the Golden Eagle women to their first national championship in 2021.
Senior Marquette Wilhite, who placed ninth (23:55.6) in the 8k at the SEC championships will lead the men's roster in the upcoming campaign.
Sarah Chapman, who finished 24th (21:01.3) in the 6k, will headline the Tiger women. Chapman, the Maidenhead, England native, led Missouri across the finish line in five of six races a season ago.
The Tigers will begin the 2022 season at the Mizzou XC Opener on Thursday. The men's 6k will begin at 8:30 with the women's 4k to follow at 9 a.m. Each race will be held at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course.
