School of Journalism Starts Week Off With Presentation On Content Creation & Social Media
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri Department of Athletics kicked off the first of three Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) seminars Monday with education for its student-athletes on content creation and social media strategy.
The summer series is a part of a new educational component to Mizzou's NIL program which focuses on experiential learning for its student-athletes. The Tigers announced enhancements to their NIL program on June 16, 2022, following the passage of an amendment to Missouri's NIL law (SB 718) – which allows state institutions to assist student-athletes in maximizing NIL opportunities as of Aug. 28, 2022.
Thanks to a partnership with the Missouri School of Journalism, professors Jim Flink and Kat Lucchesi presented inside the Memorial Stadium Columns Club to a group of student-athletes on Monday.
Director of Athletics Desireé Reed-Francois kicked the evening off by leading a discussion with the student-athletes on the purpose of event and engaging them on what they wanted to get from the three sessions.
Flink, a former news anchor in Kansas City, focused on content marketing and creation, reminding the student-athletes of the value of knowing their own stories and being authentic at all times.
He also showed off several content creation tools but said the most powerful device is one carried by most people every day – their cell phone. Flink went on to talk about posting frequency, metrics which matter and how to take advantage of the exposure which comes from being a Mizzou student-athlete in the Southeastern Conference.
Lucchesi tackled social media and the analytics used to measure success on various platforms, along with information on algorithms, the importance of engagement rate, content distribution strategies and brand protection.
She closed the session with a focus on how verification works on different platforms and best practices for the student-athletes to be able to maximize their NIL opportunities.
Strong start to our Summer NIL Educational Seminars tonight thanks to @mujschool!
