Mizzou bats crush 10 homers on the afternoon
COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 15/8 University of Missouri softball (15-4) dominated the second day of the Mizzou Softball Tournament, winning by run-rule in each game. In game one, the Tigers defeated Bradley 10-1 in six innings behind 14 strikeouts from Laurin Krings and three home runs from the Mizzou bats. The Tigers downed St. Thomas 11-2 in the second game with a program-record seven home runs.
GAME ONE
Mizzou jumped out in front in the first inning against Bradley. With two on and two out, Kara Daly ripped a single through the left side to grab the lead. Later in the inning, Alex Honnold singled to right to bring in a second run, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead to start the second.
Bradley got on the board in the top of the third with a solo home run from van Breusegen to lead off the inning. That would be all of the Braves' offense in the contest, as Laurin Krings matched her career-high with 14 strikeouts.
The Tigers could not get the bats going in the third or fourth, going down in order each time.
In the fifth, Mizzou's offense woke up. Riley Frizell led off the inning with a solo home run to center, her first of the season. With runners on second and third, Kimberly Wert hit a grounder to the Bradley shortstop and her throw home was not in time to get Chaumont at the plate, making it 4-1 for the Tigers. After Snider was caught stealing after pinch running for Wert, Kara Daly crushed a ball over the right center wall to extend the lead to five.
Mizzou's bats kept it going in the sixth. With runners at second and third, a wild pitch brought home Kendal Cook, who had entered as a pinch runner. Casidy Chaumont then singled back up the middle to bring in a second run, making it 8-1 and bringing the Tigers within a run of ending it. Brooke Wilmes crushed a 1-1 pitch just inside the foul pole down the right field line to give the Tigers a run-rule victory at 10-1.
GAME TWO
After homering to end the game against Bradley, Brooke Wilmes homered in her first at bat against St. Thomas, driving a 1-0 pitch over the right center wall. After Jenna Laird walked and stole a base, Kimberly Wert smashed a double off the left field wall to bring her home. The offensive outburst continued, as Kara Daly crushed her third homer in three games over the left field wall to make it 4-0. Alex Honnold then followed that up with a solo shot of her own to right field. After a pitching change, Kendyll Bailey made it back-to-back-to-back homers for Mizzou as she homered to straightaway center field. Mizzou led 6-0 after the first.
In the second, Jenna Laird reached after being hit by a pitch and Kimberly Wert crushed a home run to left center field to add to the lead. Wert moved into a tie for second in program history with her 46th home run as a Tiger.
To leadoff the third inning, Hatti Moore crushed a solo home run over the center field wall, her first of the season. After singles from Emma Raabe and Chantice Phillips, Kimberly Wert single to right to add one more, making it 10-0 in the third.
With one out in the fourth, Julia Crenshaw entered as a pinch hitter and crushed a solo home run to center field for her first collegiate hit.
The Tommies scored two in the bottom of the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single, but they were unable to prevent the run rule.
