COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Softball played a combined 18 innings on Saturday, but the Tigers ultimately fell in both games. No. 14/12 Northwestern rallied in the 10th inning to defeat Mizzou 9-6 before the Tigers fell in the eighth inning to Stanford by a score of 7-4.
GAME ONE
University of Missouri softball (18-8, 0-2 SEC) fell behind early in the first game of the day against Northwestern. The Wildcats jumped out in front on a Rachel Lewis solo home run in the first inning.
Alex Honnold tied it up in the second inning with an RBI single through the left side, but the Tigers would ultimately leave the bases loaded.
Northwestern added a trio of runs in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. Two of the runs were unearned the leadoff runner reached on an error.
Honnold again, came up big for the Tigers with an RBI double down the right field line. She was ultimately stranded on second after Danielle Williams entered the game for the Wildcats.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Mizzou jumped out in front. Kendyll Bailey led off the inning with a double down the left field line and the Tigers loaded the bases with one out after a walk and an error. Brooke Wilmes singled into right to bring home one run, making it a 4-3 game. Jenna Laird then singled into center to bring two runs around to score for the Tigers' first lead of the ballgame at 5-4. Wilmes was thrown out attempting to reach third.
Northwestern tied it back up in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run from Rachel Lewis, her second of the day.
In the bottom of the eighth, Mizzou nearly walked it off, but Wilmes was thrown out at the plate after Kimberly Wert' single through the left side.
The Wildcats' offense put up four runs in the top of the tenth inning, a lead that the Tigers could not overcome.
Riley Frizell's single into left scored the international tiebreaker run, but that would be all that Mizzou scored in the tenth, falling 9-5.
GAME TWO
The Tigers faced a gritty Stanford team in the second contest of the day. The first three innings were all about the pitchers. Alana Vawter and Jordan Weber kept their opponents of the board to kick off the nightcap.
The Tiges broke through in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back home runs from Kendyll Bailey and Hatti Moore. Bailey crushed a two-run shot to left center after Casidy Chaumont singled, and Moore drove one over the center field wall.
Stanford got all three runs back in the top of the sixth inning. Eck's two-run triple with one out brought the Cardinal within striking distance and Gindlesperge singled into left to tie it.
Stanford tacked on to the lead in the eighth inning, ultimately putting it out of reach. A leadoff walk, followed by a single and an error put runners in scoring position. A ground back to the circle was fielded and thrown home, but the runner slid in safely, giving the Cardinal a 4-3 edge. The next batter hit a grounder to first base and the throw was not in time, adding one more to the lead. A sacrifice fly and an RBI single ultimately pushed the score to 7-3.
Kara Daly was the only offense for Mizzou in the bottom of the eighth with her leadoff solo shot to right center.
