The duo combine to hit five home runs on the day
URBANA, Ill. – University of Missouri softball took both ends of a doubleheader against rival Illinois (11-9). The Tigers (18-6, 0-2 SEC) took the first game in extra innings after a go-ahead single from Kendyll Bailey plated Casidy Chaumont for the 7-6 victory. In the second game, Mizzou rolled to a 10-2 run-rule win with five home runs.
GAME ONE
Both offenses got off to slow starts in the first game of the day. Neither team could push across a run through the first three innings behind strong starts from Laurin Krings and Sydney Sickels.
Kara Daly delivered the first blow on the afternoon. After Wert singled into left, she was replaced by Maddie Snider, who promptly stole second. Daly then launched a 1-0 delivery over the left field wall to take a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Brooke Wilmes added to the Tigers' lead with a solo home run of her own. Jenna Laird followed up the home run with a two-out double, but she was stranded on second.
The Illini answered back in the bottom half of the fifth with a leadoff solo homer from Delaney Rummell. Ward doubled with two outs in the inning, but she was stranded on third.
Kara Daly answered right back with her second home run of the game on a drive to straightaway center field, making it 4-1 for the Tigers.
In the top of the seventh inning, Mizzou added a pair of important insurance runs. Alex Honnold led off the inning with an infield single and Brooke Wilmes crushed a line drive off the right field wall which was misplayed, allowing Honnold to score while Wilmes made it all the way around the bases to third. Jenna Laird's sacrifice fly scored Wilmes to make it 6-1 for the Tigers in the seventh.
Illinois did not go down quietly. A leadoff double from Davis and a groundout to the pitcher quickly put a runner on third base. Ryono grounded a ball on the infield just to the right of the shortstop and despite Laird's best efforts, she was not able to get the runner at first as a run came home. Another double put two runners in scoring position. An error by the Tiger first baseman allowed two runs to score, bringing the tying run to the plate with the score at 6-4.
A base hit up the middle and a double brough the score to 6-5 with the winning run on second base. Loya knocked a base hit of her own back up the middle, tying the ballgame with runners on first and third with one out. After a walk loaded the bases, Krings forced a batter to hit a blooper right to Bailey at second for the second out. She then picked up a big strikeout to force extra innings.
Casidy Chaumont got the Tigers off to a hot start in the eighth with a double to left center. Kendyll Bailey then knocked a base hit back up the middle that was fielded by the diving shortstop while Chaumont was waved around third. She slid in just under the catcher's tag to give Mizzou the 7-6 lead. Gabi Deters was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with nobody out. Hatti Moore hit a sharp grounder right at the third baseman for a double play.
Laurin Krings was able to finish off the Illini in the bottom of the eighth inning to pick up her eighth win of the season.
GAME TWO
Brooke Wilmes got the scoring started in the second game right away. She drove a 2-1 pitch to left field for her third leadoff home run of the season. Jenna Laird then singled to shortstop and stole second base. Daly then reached on a one-out walk before Casidy Chaumont ripped a single back up the middle to add another to the Tigers' lead.
Illinois answered right back with a two-out solo home run to left from Meade. The Illini then strung together three-straight singles to tie it up, but the inning ended when Alex Honnold threw out a runner attempting to go from first to third on a single to right.
Wilmes again put the Tigers in front with a solo shot to right center to lead off the third inning. Mizzou loaded the bases quickly after Laird and Wert were walked and Kara Daly singled to short. Casidy Chaumont ripped a line drive single into right center to bring home two more Tigers, making it 5-2.
Hatti Moore broke the game open with two outs with a three-run shot over the left field wall, putting the score at 8-2 in the third. Alex Honnold tripled down the left field line, but she was ultimately stranded.
The Tigers' scoring continued in the fourth. Kimberly Wert cranked a solo shot to left to tie the Mizzou all-time home run record. Casidy Chaumont added a solo home run of her own later in the inning with her drive to center, giving the Tigers a 10-2 advantage.
Jordan Weber retired the side in order in the bottom of the fifth to secure the run-rule victory.
