CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – No. 16/19 University of Missouri softball (12-3) had a big day at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The Tigers won in dramatic fashion by a score of 7-6 against a talented San Diego State team with a two-run, walkoff home run from Casidy Chaumont in the eighth. Then, the Tigers downed No. 5 Washington in only five innings by a score of 10-0.
GAME ONE
The Tigers jumped out in front right away in the first inning. Brooke Wilmes walked, Jenna Laird singled and each of them immediately moved into scoring position after the left fielder was unable to field Laird's single cleanly. Kimberly Wert then lifted a fly ball to left, scoring Wilmes from third. Leading 1-0 with one out, Kara Daly smashed a line drive off the center field fence to score Laird from second. Due to the ball hitting the wall so hard, Daly was only able to reach first. The Tigers took a 2-0 lead into the second.
Mizzou ran into some trouble in the second inning. San Diego State immediately loaded the bases with nobody out after a pair of walks and a single. After a fielder's choice that caught a runner at home, Murphy singled through the right side to put one on the board for the Aztecs. On an 0-1 count, Brocki ripped a ball down the right field line to clear the bases and give San Diego State a 4-2 lead. Megan Schumacher was able to strand her at third base to close out the inning.
The Tigers got one run back in the bottom half of the second when Casidy Chaumont reached on an infield single and the first baseman was unable to field the late throw from the pitcher, scoring Hatti Moore from first base.
In the top of the fifth, the Aztecs added one more on a leadoff home run from Barbara. San Diego State then threatened with back-to-back two-out singles before Emma Nichols entered to close out the side.
Mizzou responded in the sixth. Kendyll Bailey led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, cutting the deficit to 5-4. After Alex Honnold walked, Hatti Moore bunted her over to second. Vanessa Hollingsworth pinch hit with two outs in the inning and a runner in scoring position. Hollingsworth singled back up the middle on a 2-2 count to tie the game at five runs apiece.
After holding the Aztecs scoreless in the top of the seventh, the Tigers had a chance to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh. The Tigers loaded the bases with only one out, but they were unable to bring a run around to end the game.
In the eighth, the international tiebreaker was implemented. San Diego State sacrificed the runner over to third for the first out. After a batter was hit by a pitch, Nichols caught the next batter swinging to record the second out. The following batter hit a slow ground ball between first and second that was perfectly placed to give the Aztecs a 6-5 lead. Nichols got the next batter to fly out to retire the side.
Mizzou also elected to bunt the runner over to third. With one out and the tying run on third base, Casidy Chaumont hit the first pitch that she saw over the left field fence to walk it off.
GAME TWO
The Tigers dominated from start to finish in a run-rule victory over No. 5 Washington. After Laurin Krings sat down the Huskies in order, Brooke Wilmes led off the bottom of the first with an home run to left center.
Washington threatened to get on the board in the second inning. After a walk and an error, the Huskies bunted the runners over to scoring position. However, Laurin Krings struck out each of the next two batters to maintain the 1-0 lead.
Mizzou broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning. After Casidy Chaumont led off the inning with an infield single, she moved over to second on a Wilmes groundout. Jenna Laird then knocked a single into center field to bring Chaumont in to score. After Laird stole second base, Kimberly Wert smacked a single through the right side to bring her in, putting the score at 3-0. With two outs and one runner on, Kendyll Bailey smacked her second home run of the day to left field to push the Tigers' lead to five runs.
The Tigers did not stop there. In the bottom of the fourth, Emma Raabe lined a one-out double down the right field line before Casidy Chaumont reached on an infield single. Brooke Wilmes lined a single into left to bring home Raabe, making it 6-0 for the Tigers. Jenna Laird then singled to load the bases for Kimberly Wert. On a 1-1 pitch, Wert crushed a ball well over the right-center fence for a grand slam.
Mizzou brought a 10-0 lead into the fifth before Krings retired the Huskies in order to end the game.
