Weber, Krings Impress Once Again
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – No. 16/19 University of Missouri softball had a big first day at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, picking up wins over No. 9/11 Oregon and Texas Tech. In the Tigers' first game of the Day, Mizzou downed the Ducks by a score of 6-2 before sinking the Red Raiders with a Kara Daly walkoff single in the seventh inning.
GAME ONE
The Tigers jumped out in front early against Oregon, with Kendyll Bailey knocking a two-run single into left in the top of the first inning. Jordan Weber got off to a quick start in the circle, retiring the first nine batters that she faced.
Brooke Wilmes tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth inning with a two-run home run to center field, making it 4-0. Wilmes' homer marked the first of the season for the graduate student.
Oregon was able to get on the board in the bottom half of the fourth. The Ducks had runners on second and third base with nobody out, but they were only able to score one run. Pai singled through the left side, bringing home one run, but Casidy Chaumont threw a home to catch a second runner attempting to score.
Kimberly Wert led off the fifth inning with a solo shot to left center on a 3-2 count to make it 5-1. Oregon got a run back in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run of its own.
In the top of the seventh, the Tigers had the first two runners of the inning reach base before they were moved up one base and Alex Honnold's groundout brought in another run.
The Ducks threatened in the seventh inning. With a runner on first and one out, Luschar smashed a double to left center, but the runner rounding third was too far off the bag and Casidy Chaumont threw her out. Jordan Weber was able to close it out for another complete game effort.
GAME TWO
Laurin Krings was dominant for the Tigers in the second game of the day. The sophomore struck out 14 batters in a complete-game effort.
In the top of the second, Texas Tech had a chance to jump out in front. With runners on second and third and one out, a ball got past Moore behind the plate, but she was able to toss the ball to Krings to record the out at home. The next batter went down swinging on a 3-2 count to close out the inning.
After going down in order in the first, Mizzou had a baserunner reach in each of the remaining innings. However, it was the Red Raiders that got on the board first. After a leadoff double in the fifth inning, Texas Tech used a pair of fly out to bring in the first run of the game.
The Tigers answered right back, jumping on the board for one run. Casidy Chaumont ripped a one-out double down the right field line and Brooke Wilmes singled to right to bring her in. Mizzou loaded the bases, but the Tigers were unable to add any more.
Mizzou had a chance to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh and the Tigers got started right away. Wilmes singled to lead off the inning before she was moved over to second on a Laird groundout. Maddie Snider entered in place of Wilmes at second and she was moved over to third on a Wert groundout. Kara Daly then stepped to the plate with a chance to win it for Mizzou. Daly hit a chopper to the left of the second baseman and she was unable to make the play, giving the Tigers the win.
