
Mizzou Goes 1-1 in Double-Header Against Liberty & JMU

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The University of Missouri (5-5) competed in its first double-header of the season against Liberty University (8-3) and James Madison University (4-6) on Wednesday, Feb. 23. The Tigers lost a close match against Liberty, 3-4, but remained collected and defeated JMU, 4-3.
Missouri came out strong in doubles play against Liberty with Bronte Murgett and Gabriela Martinez beating Tiffany Nguyen and Maretha Burger, 6-3. Emelie Schwarte and Elys Ventura followed with a victory over Micaela Ode Mitre and Maria Juliana Parra Romero, 6-3. With the doubles point going to Mizzou, the team moved into singles play. Ellie Wright and Murgett chipped in two singles points, but the Lady Flames made a late comeback that the Tigers couldn't prevent.
After an hour break, Mizzou was back on the courts to face JMU in their second match of the day. Wright and Martinez grabbed the first match for the doubles point, 6-1, followed by Valentina Vazquez and Elys Ventura, 6-2. Missouri was once again in the driver's seat heading into singles competition. James Madison snatched the first two singles points, but Murgett answered with another singles win and tied the match score at two apiece. Schwarte put another singles point on the board, which was matched by JMU. Ventura made an impressive second set comeback against Michelle Los Arcos and clinched the match for Mizzou in the third set, 6-7, 7-6, 6-1.
"Competition was very tough today. The whole day and both matches came down to a few points here and there." said coach Chris Wootton. "We began to solve the doubles question with two solid points. We will continue to get better and focus on our singles points. Each day is a great opportunity to prepare for our very difficult SEC schedule."
Mizzou stays on the road and will travel a few hours east to face Old Dominion on Friday, Feb. 25. The match is slated for 10:30 a.m. CST.
