LEESBURG, Fla. – No. 17 University of Missouri softball (8-2) used a pair of dominant pitching performances to sweep a Saturday doubleheader. Laurin Krings tossed a no-hitter in the Tigers' 6-0 win over Bethune-Cookman before Jordan Weber shut out Florida Atlantic en route to a 3-0 victory.
GAME ONE
The Tigers picked up a very quick lead to get the day started. Brooke Wilmes doubled to left center on the third pitch of the game and Jenna Laird lined one into left field for a sacrifice fly to put the Tigers up by one. With two outs, Kimberly Wert drove one to the warning track in left field for a double before Alex Honnold tripled to left center, putting the score at 2-0. A wild pitch allowed Honnold to score, giving the Tigers a third run.
Laurin Krings entered the circle for the first time while already holding a three-run lead. She would run into some trouble in the first. After getting the first batter to foul out, the Wildcats were able to get a few runners on base. A walk, an error and another walk loaded the bases with only one out in the inning. Krings was able to jam the next batter for a blooper over to first base where Raabe was able to fire home to get the force out. Krings then struck out the next batter on three pitches to preserve the three-run lead.
The Tigers threatened again in the top of the third. After Kendyll Bailey singled up the middle, Maddie Snider entered as a pinch runner. Snider stole second and then took third on an errant throw before Kimberly Wert drove a single up the middle to bring her in. The Tigers loaded the bases with one out after a pair of walks. Emma Raabe then hit a fly ball into right field to score McGivern from third. Chantice Phillips hit a deep fly ball to center that was caught on the warning track for the third out with the Tigers leading 5-0.
Laurin Krings was dominant in the circle after the shaky first inning. She retired the final 18 batters in a row while striking out eight on the afternoon.
The Tigers added the sixth run in the sixth inning after Hatti Moore reached on an infield single. Kendal Cook entered as a pinch runner and stole second before moving over to third on a Julia Crenshaw flyout to right field. Brooke Wilmes then executed the squeeze play to perfection, bunting home Cook and advancing to second when the throw got away from the catcher. Wilmes advanced to third on a wild pitch, but the Tigers could not bring her in.
Krings finished off the no-hitter in the seventh inning with a groundout to second base. She did not allow a baserunner after the first inning.
GAME TWO
It was Jordan Weber's turn in the circle in the second game of the afternoon. She got right to work, retiring the first three batters in order and then working around a walk in the second inning.
Mizzou loaded the bases in the bottom of the third inning with three walks, but the Tigers were unable to score.
Weber then struck out the side in the fourth inning and the Tigers were able to get on the board. Kimberly Wert led off the inning with a double to deep right field before she was replaced by Kendal Cook. Alex Honnold officially gave the Tigers the lead with a single into left center. She advanced to second on the throw home and moved to third on a flyout. Honnold crossed the plate after another wild pitch to put the score at 2-0.
Weber's no-hit bid was broken up in the fifth inning on a double to left field, but she was able to prevent any damage to the scoreboard.
Mizzou added an important insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning after Megan Moll led off with a single. Honnold and Moore walked before Julia Crenshaw earned her first RBI with a bases-loaded walk.
Weber finished off the shutout in the bottom of the seventh.
