No. 11/12 Softball Downs Wisconsin, Falls to No. 10/13 Virginia Tech
LEESBURG, Fla. – University of Missouri softball (2-2) split its two matchups on the second day at the Northern Light's Invitational. To open the day, the Tigers defeated Wisconsin 8-1 behind a three-hit game from Brooke Wilmes. Mizzou then fell to No. 10/13 Virginia Tech in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
Missouri picked its offensive game on the second day of the season. The Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third inning and did not look back. Casidy Chaumont recorded an RBI groundout to put the Tigers on the board at 1-0 before Brooke Wilmes singled right back up the middle to double the lead.
In the third, Kimberly Wert ripped a double into left center after Jenna Laird singled and stole a base. The Tigers added two more runs in the inning after Kendyll Bailey smacked a sacrifice fly to deep center field and Megan Moll reached on an RBI infield single.
Jordan Weber was impressive yet again for Mizzou. She has put up back-to-back scoreless outings to kick off the season.
Wisconsin got on the board in the sixth with a two-out, two-strike triple to right center.
Mizzou added some insurance runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth. Vanessa Hollingsworth pinch-hit with runners on second and third and smacked a two-run single into right for her first career hit. Brooke Wilmes then knocked a single up the middle to bring home another to put the score at 8-1.
GAME TWO
The Tigers then faced off with No. 10/13 Virginia Tech in the nightcap. Mizzou took an early lead over the Hokies in the second inning. After loading the bases, Megan Moll singled through the left side to put the score at 1-0. Alex Honnold then scored on a wild pitch to double the lead.
Virginia Tech broke through in the bottom of the third inning. A two-run double to left by Bailey tied the game up. The Hokies were then able to take the lead in the fourth after an RBI single with two outs. Missouri was able to limit the damage and hold the score at 3-2 for the Hokies.
The Tigers were able to get another run back in the top of the fifth. Jenna Laird ripped a two-out single back up the middle and then stole a base. Virginia Tech appeared to be out the fifth innings without any more damage, but a dropped pop up allowed the Tigers to score one to tie it up.
The Hokies tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth and the Tigers were ultimately unable to respond.
NOTES
Brooke Wilmes moved into sole possession of fifth on the Mizzou all-time hits list with 232.
Wilmes extended her hitting streak to 13 gamed before it was snapped vs. Virginia Tech.
Vanessa Hollingsworth picked up her first career hit with a two-RBI single against Wisconsin.
Maddie Snider entered as a pinch runner against Wisconsin and the Columbia, Missouri native scored her first career run.
UP NEXT
The Tigers will face off with No. 24 Liberty to close out the Northern Lights Invitational at 12 p.m. CT.
