The Missouri men's basketball team is set to open the 2022-23 campaign on Monday night, hosting Southern Indiana. Tipoff at Mizzou Arena is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen on SEC Network+.
PROMOTIONS
• Monday's opener is Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day with a special discounted ticket for Missouri employees.
• Additionally, tickets start as low as $5 for all fans for Mizzou's first regular-season game.
• The first 4,500 students will receive The Zou t-shirts, while the team's 2022-23 schedule poster are an additional giveaway for all fans.
ABOUT THE TIGERS
• Missouri finished the 2021-22 campaign with a 12-21 record, placing 11th in the SEC with a 5-13 mark.
• The 2022-23 season marks the first for new head coach Dennis Gates, who joins Mizzou after a successful three-year run at Cleveland State.
• The Tigers return three student-athletes from the 2021-22 campaign, while adding 12 newcomers to the roster.
• Kobe Brown was named to the All-SEC Second Team after leading MU in points (12.5) and rebounds (7.6) last season.
ABOUT THE SCREAMING EAGLES
• Southern Indiana is in its first season as a Division I member, playing in the OVC.
• The Eagles finished the 2021-22 campaign with an 18-8 record and 12-6 mark in the GLVC.
• Preseason All-OVC selection Jelani Simmons led USI with 14.2 points per game last season.
• The Eagles played Midway in an exhibition match Wednesday, claiming an 85-50 win. Isaiah Swope led USI with 18 points.
SERIES HISTORY
• The Tigers and Screaming Eagles have met on two prior occasions, both at Hearnes Center with Mizzou finishing on top.
• Missouri won the first meeting, 82-75, during the 1985-86 season before earning a 77-62 victory over a Bruce Pearl-coached Eagles team during the 1992-93 campaign.
TIGERS VERSUS THE OVC
• Missouri is 36-1 all-time against schools in the Ohio Valley Conference, including a 35-1 mark in Columbia.
• The Tigers have won their last three meetings against OVC foes since suffering their lone setback with the conference in 2016, 67-64 to Eastern Illinois.
MIZZOU IN SEASON OPENERS
• Missouri is set to open its 117th of action on Monday night against the Screaming Eagles.
• The Tigers own a 95-21 all-time record in season openers (81.9 winning percentage), including a mark of 80-9 in Columbia (89.9%).
• Mizzou has won its first game of the year in each of the last seven years (by an average of 24.1 points) and 21 of its last 22 dating back to the 2000-01 opener.
MIZZOU DEBUT FOR COACH GATES
• Not only are the Tigers set to open the 2022-23 campaign on Monday, but the game will also mark the first official contest for Whitten Family Men's Basketball Head Coach Dennis Gates.
• The 20th head coach in Mizzou men's basketball history, the previous 19 head coaches own an 17-2 all-time record in their first game with the Black & Gold.
• Gates earned his first career victory in his second college game at Cleveland State, posting 79-54 win over Edinboro (Nov. 9, 2019).
EXHIBITION RECAP
• Prior to officially opening the 2022-23 season against Southern Indiana, the Tigers posted an 89-61 win over Washington University in an exhibition contest.
• The 28-point margin of victory was MU's largest in an exhibition contest since a 92-53 win over Missouri Western prior to the 2015-16 season.
• Senior Kobe Brown led the Tigers to the win over the Bears with a 25-point, 11-rebound double-double – making 11-of-15 field goals.
• Overall, Mizzou dominated the paint – outscoring WashU by 28 points, 64-36.
ALL-CONFERENCE PLAYERS
• Despite returning only three players from last year's team, Missouri features an experienced roster with numerous accolades.
• Five Tigers earned all-conference honors in their respective leagues last season – Kobe Brown (second-team All-SEC), Noah Carter (second-team All-MVC), Tre Gomillion (third-team All-Horizon), D'Moi Hodge (first-team All-Horizon) and Isiaih Mosley (first-team All-MVC).
