COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri football's Barrett Banister was named one of 12 semifinalists for the 2022 Wuerffel Trophy.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented each February in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Named after Danny Wuerffel, 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy exists to honor college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world.
A Spring 2021 cum laude graduate, Banister is a 2022 AFCA Good Works Team nominee and was a 2021 Burlsworth Trophy nominee. A former walk-on who earned a scholarship prior to the 2019 season, he is a four-time member of the SEC Honor Roll and was a 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. His volunteer experience includes Playing 4 Hope (visits with kids in the hospital due to disability, illness or disease), Angel Tree Secret Santa (holiday shopping for families in need) and Night of Champions (kids camp at Mizzou's Faurot Field).
Banister has played in 51 career games with 111 receptions for 1,009 yards. He has hauled in 27 or more receptions in three-consecutive season and has a reception in all seven games he's played in 2022 with six multi-catch games. His three receptions in the opener against Louisiana Tech made him the third Tiger in history with a reception in five seasons, joining Lamont Downer (1974-78) and George Shorthose (1980-84).
The formal announcement of the 2022 recipient is scheduled to be made December 8 and the presentation of the 2022 Wuerffel Trophy will occur on February 24, 2023, at the 54th All Sports Association Awards Banquet in Fort Walton Beach.
Mizzou (4-4, 2-3 SEC) returns to Faurot Field / Memorial Stadium on Saturday to take on the Wildcats. The Tigers will celebrate Military Appreciation Day and Ag Day in a game which kicks off at 11 a.m. CT and airs on SEC Network and the Tiger Radio Network.
