No. 15/16 Mizzou Softball Falls in Opener to No. 17/15 Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 15/16 Mizzou Softball's bats were unable to get going against No. 17/15 Tennessee, falling 4-0 on the road in the first game of the series.
Tennessee pitcher Ashley Rogers only allowed one hit to the Mizzou bats on a Jenna Laird single in the first.
Mizzou's best opportunity to score was in the first. Jenna Laird singled and stole a base, but the Tigers could not come up with a timely hit.
Tennessee jumped in front early. In the bottom of the first, the Vols led off with a single and a stolen base before a groundout and a single brought in the first run of the game.
Leading 1-0 entering the second, Tennessee led off the inning with a double and a home run to immediately extend the lead to three. The Vols were able to get a runner to second after a walk and a groundout. Brooke Wilmes prevented any more damage after she threw out a runner that was attempting to score on a single to center.
In the third, Brooke Wilmes again recorded an outfield assist, this time on a double play. A deep fly ball to center was caught by the senior at the wall and she spun around an threw back to Emma Raabe at first base to finish off the double play.
TURNING POINT
The Vols led 3-0 entering the fifth inning and the Tigers' bats could not get going. In the bottom of the fifth, Tennessee was able to get a run across after the first two batters reached on a single and an error.
The Tigers were unable to get another baserunner until the seventh, but it was not enough. Rogers retired 19-straight batters between the first and seventh innings.
TOP TIGERS
Megan Schumacher went three innings with no earned runs to keep the Tigers in the ballgame.
Jenna Laird went 1-for-3 with the sole hit for Mizzou. She also added a stolen base.
NOTES
The Tigers recorded a season-low of one hit in the ballgame and they were shutout for only the third time on the season.
The last pitcher to one-hit Mizzou was Ashley Rogers in 2019.
Mizzou did not record an extra-base hit for the first time in 2021.
Jenna Laird has stolen 11-of-11 bases to start her career.
