COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 15 Mizzou Softball responded to Friday night's frustrating loss by run-ruling No. 3 Florida in five innings by a score of 10-2.
The Gators, however, were able to put the first mark on the game. Hannah Adams led off the game with a solo home run to left center field to give Florida an immediate 1-0 lead.
Mizzou then threatened in the bottom half of the inning, getting runners on the corners with only one out after singles from Brooke Wilmes and Hatti Moore. The Tigers were not able to capitalize, lining into a double play to end the inning.
After allowing the first two runners to reach, Laurin Krings worked out of a jam in the second, retiring the next three batters, highlighted by another incredible catch by Casidy Chaumont The Tigers responded right away.
With one out, Cayla Kessinger worked a walk and Emma Raabe ripped the first pitch that she saw over the right-center wall to give the Tigers the lead. Mizzou was not done there. Kendyll Bailey and Alex Honnold ripped back-to-back singles. Honnold was able to move up to second on the throw attempting to get Bailey advancing to third. Brooke Wilmes smoked a single through the left side of the infield, off the glove of the Florida third baseman, scoring two more for the Tigers. Mizzou loaded the bases with one out but could not add any more to the lead. The score stood at 4-1 for Missouri after two innings.
Florida was able to collect a run in the top of the third. A single off the center field wall, followed by a double into right center put two in scoring position with no outs. After a popup, Florida blooped a single into center, just out of the reach of a diving Chaumont. The Tigers were able to get out of the bases-loaded jam without any more damage.
TURNING POINT
Mizzou jumped back on the board in the bottom half of the third. With two outs, Kendyll Bailey and Alex Honnold ripped a pair of singles to put two runners on base. Brooke Wilmes then dropped down a bunt single and the first baseman was unable to field the throw, allowing it to get into the outfield, allowing Bailey to score from third. The Florida catcher then attempted to pick off Honnold at third and the throw was too high, reaching the outfield and scoring her from third. The Tigers led 6-2 after the third.
Laurin Krings retired the side in order in the top of the fourth, the only half-inning of its kind on the day. The Mizzou bats were firing again in the bottom half of the fourth, again coming up with a two-out rally. With nobody on and two outs, Kimberly Wert smoked a single through the right side, followed by a single from Cayla Kessinger. Emma Raabe then drew a walk to load the bases for Mizzou. Kendyll Bailey ripped the first pitch that she saw into center to bring home Wert and Kessinger, putting the score at 8-2 for Mizzou.
