MCCRARY, SCHAFFER TO COMPETE AT THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
- Junior Hannah McCrary and freshman Sydney Schaffer of the Mizzou gymnastics team both earned berths to the 2021 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships as individual qualifiers following their performances at the 2021 NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional on April 2.
- The duo will compete in the first semifinal session on Friday, April 16 at Noon CT at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
- The meet will be televised live on ESPN2 with Bart Connor and Kathy Johnson Clarke on the call. Individual event feeds will also be available on ESPN.com/watch.
- Schaffer earned an invitation on beam as the highest beam scorer not on a qualifying team from second round action at the Tuscaloosa Regional, as she recorded a career-high 9.95 on the apparatus.
- McCrary notched a 9.925 on floor, which tied her career-best, to earn her spot to the NCAA Championships. Her score was matched by two other non-qualifying individuals but McCrary claimed the berth on the second tiebreaker, which was highest head judge score.
- McCrary and Schaffer will rotate with California in the afternoon semifinal, with McCrary scheduled to compete in the first rotation and Schaffer in the final rotation.
MCCRARY CAME UP STRONG AS A JUNIOR
- A three-event competitor, McCrary was in the floor and beam lineups in all 11 meets and was in the vault lineup 10 times
- She led the Tigers with five scores of 9.9 or better on floor on the season, and notched scores of 9.925 in the second round and a 9.9 in the regional final
- McCrary also tallied career-highs of 9.85 on beam three times in 2021 and went for a season-best 9.85 on vault in the NCAA second round
SCHAFFER IMPROVES THROUGHOUT FRESHMAN SEASON
- A freshman, Schaffer competed on beam in every meet in 2021 and notched seven scores of 9.8 or better, including five of 9.85 or higher
- The 9.95 at the NCAA second round was a season-best, bettering a 9.9 scored at LSU in the regular season finale
- Schaffer also entered the vault and floor lineups in the later part of the season and tallied career-bests of 9.85 on floor on in the regional final and 9.825 on floor in the second round
TIGERS FINISH 2021 14TH IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
- The Mizzou gymnastics team concluded the 2021 season ranked 14th in the national rankings with an National Qualifying Score of 392.994.
- As the Tigers qualified for the NCAA Regional Final, the team was assured of a top 16 finish.
- Ultimately Mizzou's NQS of 393.994 (team NQS of 196.444 + regional final score of 196.550) placed them 14th.
- The ranking of 14th matched the team's ranking from a season ago, as the squad was ranked 14th when the season was abruptly ended due to COVID-19.
- It also marks the highest final team ranking since Missouri finished 12th in 2010.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Mizzou gymnastics scored a 196.550 to place fourth at the 2021 NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional Final on April 3 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
- As the top two finishers, No. 1 Oklahoma (198.175) and No. 7 Alabama (197.575) advanced to the national championships. No. 10 Arkansas placed third with a 196.700.
- The 196.550 marked the third-highest score for the Tigers in regional competition, while Mizzou's 49.325 on floor was a season-best.
- Mizzou opened strong on floor with a 49.325, a season-high on the event for the second night in a row, thanks to all six scores of 9.8 or higher. Junior Hannah McCrary tallied a 9.9 to lead the Tigers, her fifth 9.9 or better score on the event this season. Junior Alisa Sheremeta posted a 9.875, and Schreiber, senior Gabrielle Gottula and freshman Sydney Schaffer earned 9.85s, a career-high for Schaffer. Freshman Amaya Marshall added a 9.8.
- A career-high-tying 9.9 from Schreiber on vault paced the squad to a 49.025 overall on the event. In addition to Schreiber's score, Gottula garnered a 9.85 and Marshall went 9.8. Sophomore Hollyn Patrick earned a 9.775 and McCrary went 9.75.
- The Tigers totaled a 49.125 on bars in the third rotation. Three Tigers, Marshall, Patrick and Schreiber, all notched team-best scores of 9.85s. Sheremeta added a 9.8, senior Chelsey Christensen went 9.775 and freshman Adalayna Hufendiek posted a 9.75.
- Schreiber anchored the final rotation with a 9.925 on beam for her seventh score of 9.9 or better on the event this season. The Tigers went 49.025 overall on the event to close out the meet, as Marshall earned a 9.825, Schaffer a 9.8, Sheremeta a 9.75 and Gottula a 9.725.
TIGERS PUT IT ALL TOGETHER IN NCAA SECOND ROUND, SET PROGRAM REGIONAL RECORDS GALORE
- The Mizzou gymnastics team erupted for the third-highest team score in program history with a 197.325 in the NCAA Regional Second Round to advance to the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional Final. No. 1 Oklahoma won the night session with a 198.000, followed by Mizzou in second and Maryland in third with a 195.075.
- During the meet, the Tigers set program regional score records in overall score, and on beam and floor, as well as notching the second-highest beam total in school history. Additionally, freshman Sydney Schaffer and junior Hannah McCrary set Mizzou individual regional records, on beam and floor, respectively, and freshman Amaya Marshall tied the regional high on bars.
- Missouri opened the meet with a 49.300 on vault, the highest-ever regional score on the event, and a season-high. McCrary closed the rotation with a career-high-tying 9.925, which also broke the team's individual floor regional high. Junior Alisa Sheremeta tied her career-best with a 9.9, and sophomore Sienna Schreiber went a 9.85. Additionally, senior Gabrielle Gottula posted a 9.825 and Schaffer also went a career-best with a 9.8.
- A 49.250 on vault tied the team's season-best thanks to all six scores of 9.8 or better. Gottula led the way with a 9.875 in the anchor position, while Marshall, McCrary and Schreiber all tallied 9.85s. Schaffer notched another career-high with a 9.825 and sophomore Hollyn Patrick added a 9.8.
- Marshall led the way on bars in the third rotation with a career-best 9.9, as Mizzou totaled 49.325 as a team. The team score was a season-best and tied for the sixth-highest event total on the event ever for the Tigers. Patrick and Sheremeta both notched 9.875s, which tied Patrick's personal-best and set Sheremeta's, and senior Chelsey Christensen also matched her career-high with a 9.85. Schreiber also added a 9.825.
- The Tigers closed the meet on beam with a 49.450, which stands as the second-highest beam total in program history, as four Tigers scored at least a 9.9. Schaffer nailed her routine for a career-best 9.95 to become the third Mizzou gymnast this season to go at least 9.95 on the apparatus and tally the highest-ever score for a Tiger on beam in a regional. Three more Tigers, Gottula, Schreiber and Sheremeta, all earned 9.9s, and Marshall claimed a 9.8.
