NORMAN, Okla. – No. 18/17 Mizzou Softball led from start to finish in the opening game of the Courtyard Marriott Tournament. The Tigers put up two runs in the first and second innings and relied on dominant pitching from Jordan Weber and Megan Schumacher to put the game away.
After Jordan Weber put up a zero in the first, Brooke Wilmes and Cayla Kessinger pushed the issue early. Wilmes reached on a walk and Kessinger singled up the middle to immediately get a pair of runners on board. The two ran a double-steal and the throw from the catcher went down the left field line, allowing Wilmes to score and Kessinger to advance to third.
Kimberly Wert then ripped a single into center field, allowing Kessinger to score to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the first.
In the second inning, Mizzou quickly got runners aboard. Kendyll Bailey singled up the middle, Jenna Laird reached on an error, and Brooke Wilmes reached on a bunt single. Cayla Kessinger singled to center, allowing Bailey to score. Then, Hatti Moore lifted a sac fly into center field to bring home another run, putting the score at 4-0 for the Tigers.
