No. 17/20 Mizzou Softball Secures Midweek Victory Over SLU

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – While No. 17/20 Mizzou Softball got off to a slow start, they were able to overcome the early deficit and capture a comfortable 10-4 victory over Saint Louis.

In the first, the Billikens were able to jump in front with a bases-loaded single that brought one run home and a passed ball, bringing home a second run. Each of the runs were unearned.

Mizzou was unable to get on the board in the second. In the bottom half of the innings, Saint Louis was able to get a pair of runners on base with a pair of singles. The runners reached second and third before Laurin Krings retired the side.

The Tigers got on the board in the top-half of the third inning. Kendyll Bailey walked to lead off the inning and was moved around the bases on a groundout and a Brooke Wilmes single. Jenna Laird was able to bring her home on a sacrifice fly down the left field line, putting the score at 2-1.

After a scoreless bottom of the third, Mizzou was able to tie the game in the fourth. Casidy Chaumont led off the inning with a single up the middle. She took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a groundout. A Kendyll Bailey single through the left side eventually scored her from third, tying the ballgame.

Laurin Krings then went out and struck out the Billiken side. The Tigers got off to a hot start in the top of the fifth. Brooke Wilmes doubled to left to lead it off and Jenna Laird smacked a single through the left side to put runners on the corners. After Laird stole second, Hatti Moore lifted a sacrifice fly into right to give Mizzou the lead. Kimberly Wert then ripped a double over the right fielder's head to score Laird from third. The inning ended with a 4-2 Tiger lead.

Saint Louis was able to get one of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth. The Billikens led off the inning with a solo home run to left gave the home team a bit of hope before Emma Nichols came on to close out the inning.

TURNING POINT

Mizzou was able to grab some valuable insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning. After back-to-back walks from Megan Moll and Kendyll Bailey, Abby George grounded out to move the runners up and Brooke Wilmes grounded out to score Moll from third.

With Imani Myint at third base as a pinch runner for Bailey, the Billikens attempted to pick her off, but the catcher's throw was off line and allowed Myint to score. Leading 6-3 with no runners on, Jenna Laird reached on a single to short and stole a base. Hatti Moore then walked to put two on with two outs. Lindsey Warick then collected the first two RBIs of her career with a double into the right-center gap, putting Mizzou up 8-3.

Saint Louis was able to score a run in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out rally. Back-to-back doubles scored a run for SLU to put the score at 8-4.

Mizzou generated a pair of runs in the seventh on a Brooke Wilmes two-run single.

TOP TIGERS

Brooke Wilmes went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, a run scored and three runs driven in.

Jenna Laird recorded another multi-hit day for the Tigers, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. The freshman also added two stolen bases and a walk.

Lindsey Warick added her first and second-career RBIs on a double in the sixth inning. It was also Warick's first extra-base hit.
