ATHENS, Ga. – No. 16/18 Mizzou Softball was unable to come back from an early eight-run deficit, falling to No. 19/20 Georgia by a score of 14-10.
In the top of the first inning, the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs, but back-to-back fielder's choices and a pop up prevented Mizzou from scoring.
Georgia was able to break the game open in the bottom half of the first, after the Tigers were unable to capitalize. The Bulldogs scored eight runs in the first inning on four home runs. Georgia had back-to-back-to-back home runs to pile on the damage quickly.
Trailing 8-0 in the second inning, Mizzou got on the board with a Kendyll Bailey solo home run, her second of the season. After Bailey's home run, Abby George drew a walk. It looked like Georgia was going to be able to get out of the inning with a fly out to left, but it was dropped by the Georgia outfielder, allowing George to score.
In the top of the third inning, Emma Raabe put another run on the board with a solo home run of her own to center field. It was her fifth of the season.
However, Georgia was able to get three back in the bottom half, scoring two on a double down the right field line, and a third on a wild pitch. The Bulldogs led 11-3 at the end of the third inning.
Once again, in the fourth, it looked like Georgia was going to get out of an inning without any damage, but an error allowed a run to score with two outs. The next batter up would be Kimberly Wert, who drove her ninth home run of the season over the right field wall to make the score 11-6.
Georgia took one run back in the bottom half of the fourth on a sacrifice fly.
In the top of the fifth inning, Mizzou pulled within striking distance. Abby George collected her first RBI of the season on a single down the left field line. Brooke Wilmes then singled to left-center, bringing in another run. With two outs, the Bulldogs again made a costly error, allowing two runs to score on what seemed to be an inning-ending groundout.
TURNING POINT
The Tigers had all of the momentum after the top of the fifth inning, cutting the Georgia lead to 12-10. After recording two quick outs in the bottom half, Georgia's Savana Sikes ripped a single to center and Lacey Fincher drove a two-run home run to right field to give the Bulldogs a largers cushion.
Georgia ace Mary Wilson Avant entered the game and she was able to slow down the Mizzou offensive onslaught. She closed
