GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Mizzou swimming and diving team posted two top four finishes, including a third-place showing in the 50 free from senior Sarah Thompson (Collierville, Tenn.), on Thursday during day two action at the 2021 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro, N.C.
In addition to Thompson's third-place finish, the Tigers also placed fourth in the 200 free relay, matching the program's highest-ever relay finish.
The Tigers ended Thursday 13th in the team standings with 55 points.
KEY PERFORMANCES
Thompson, who entered the Championships seeded third, matched her seed to touch third in the 50 free final. The senior lowered her own school record in the event with a 21.42 in the evening session, bettering her old mark of 21.53 set in November of 2019. Thompson became only the third women's swimmer in program history to finish third or better at NCAAs, joining former All-Americans Dominique Bouchard and Hannah Stevens.
Also claiming All-America honors in the 50 free was junior Megan Keil (Derby, Kan.), who won the consolation final. Keil swam a 21.87 in the evening to claim ninth overall and garner All-America honorable mention accolades. Her finals time was just off her personal-best of 21.83, which she set at November's Mizzou Invite.
The Tigers notched another school record to open the finals session in the 200 free relay. Mizzou's quartet of Keil, Thompson and sophomores Alex Moderski (McFarland, Wis.) and Amy Feddersen (Ames, Iowa) went 1:27.01 to place fourth overall in the race. The fourth-place finish matched the highest-ever placement for a Mizzou women's relay, tying the 400 medley relay that took third in 2015.
In the diving well, junior Savana Trueb (Colorado Springs, Colo.) placed 24th overall on 1-meter with a prelims score of 266.3.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou head coach Andrew Grevers
"I'm very happy with our first day. The way we kicked this night off with an amazing 200 free relay, with a school record and fourth-place at NCAAs. We carried the energy throughout the session. Megan Keil getting ninth in the B final really lifted the team up as well and got everyone amped up for Sarah Thompson in the A final, where she walked away with third-place. It was an awesome night and I can't wait to get going tomorrow."
