No. 19/20 Mizzou Softball Secures Two More Victories at South Alabama Invitational

MOBILE, Ala. – No. 19/20 Mizzou Softball captured two more wins on Saturday at the South Alabama Invitational. The Tigers faced off with Northwestern State in the first game and SIU-Edwardsville in the finale.
GAME ONE
In the first game of the day, Mizzou was driven by a strong pitching performance from Jordan Weber and a 14-hit showing in just four innings.
Mizzou was able to gain control of the game in the first inning. After Jordan Weber was able to strand a pair of baserunners, Brooke Wilmes, Cayla Kessinger and Hatti Moore led off the game with three consecutive singles to load the bases. Kimberly Wert came to the plate and lifted a Sac Fly to left field to put the first run on the board.
Emma Raabe was then able to come up with an RBI single to left field, scoring Kessinger. Hatti Moore had reached third on the single and she was able to score on a throwing error from the left fielder. Raabe advanced to second and was then driven in on a Kendyll Bailey single up the middle to make the score 4-0 for the Tigers in the first inning.
In the second inning, Brooke Wilmes reached after getting hit by a pitch and Cayla Kessinger ripped a single through the right side. Wilmes reached third base and Kessinger advanced to second on the throw to third. Hatti Moore lifted a ball into shallow right field that was caught by the second baseman and Brooke Wilmes' aggressive baserunning turned it into a sacrifice fly for Moore.
Casidy Chaumont led off the inning by beating out a grounder to third base and then advancing to second on the misplay. Emma Raabe then singled through the left side to move Chaumont over to third and Raabe was able to take second on the throw. After a Bailey walk, Alex Honnold was able to deliver and RBI single up the middle, scoring Chaumont. Raabe was thrown out at home on the play. After a Wilmes walk, Cayla Kessinger hit a single off the pitcher's glove to bring in another run, making it 7-0 for the Tigers.
TURNING POINT
Mizzou was able to put the game away early due to a dominant pitching performance by Jordan Weber. Weber was able to produce four scoreless innings before the game was closed out by Megan Schumacher.
At the end of the third inning, the Tigers needed to add a run to put the mercy rule into play. Kimberly Wert delivered on the first pitch of the inning, sending it over the left field wall for her sixth home run of the season. Schumacher then entered the game to close out the run-rule victory.
TOP TIGERS
Jordan Weber turned it another excellent pitching performance, going four scoreless innings. She moves to 4-0 on the season.
Cayla Kessinger pushed the envelope for the Mizzou offense in the first game of the day. The redshirt-senior went 3-for-3 at the plate with a run driven in and a run scored.
Alex Honnold was a productive batter for the Tigers, going 2-for-3 at the plate and a run driven in.
Kimberly Wert drove in two runs for Mizzou, one on her solo home run and the other on a sacrifice fly.
NOTES
Kimberly Wert hit her 29th home run as a Mizzou Tiger, putting her solely in 8th place on the Mizzou all-time list. Wert also hit five home runs as a freshman at Hofstra.
Jordan Weber moves to 4-0 on the season, just one win shy of her 2020 total.
The win represents the Tigers' third run-rule victory of the season. Mizzou won four games by run-rule in 2020.
GAME TWO
In the second game of the day, the Tigers faced off with SIU-Edwardsville. Mizzou was able to grab an early 2-0 lead in the second inning on an Alex Honnold double to deep left-center field and a Jenna Laird infield single with a throwing error by the third baseman.
SIUE would take a run back in the third inning on a single down the right field line. Mizzou would respond to the SIUE score in the fourth inning with Jazmyn Rollin pinch running, stealing two bases, and scoring on an errant throw by the catcher to make it a 3-1 game.
TURNING POINT
The Tigers got back on the board in the sixth inning with a Brooke Wilmes RBI single, followed by some aggressive baserunning. Jenna Laird singled in the inning and came around to score on a wild pitch, then Brooke Wilmes was able to draw a throwing error by the second baseman, allowing her to score.
Laurin Krings continued to mow down the SIUE batters after a strong start by Emma Nichols. Sophie Dandola entered the game in the seventh inning to close it out.
TOP TIGERS
Abby George came off the bench and was able to go 2-for-2 in the game.
Laurin Krings entered in relief in the fourth inning and went three innings without allowing a hit, earning her second win.
Alex Honnold had another productive game for Mizzou, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run driven in and two runs scored.
Jenna Laird got back on track with a 2-for-3 performance, scoring a run and stealing a base.
NOTES
The Tigers stole five bases for the first time since 2018 at Georgia (4/8/18).
Alex Honnold has hit safely in seven straight games.
Brooke Wilmes extended her hit streak to 11 games.
Mizzou snapped a nine-game home run streak in the second game of the day.
UP NEXT
Tomorrow, at 9 am CT, Mizzou will take on Middle Tennessee State in the final game of the South Alabama Invitational.
