Mizzou Basketball Game Notes
STORYLINES
- Head coach Cuonzo Martin enters Saturday's matchup with South Carolina just one win shy of 250 career wins.
- Mizzou is one of just six teams nationally with six Quad 1 victories (four of which were away from Mizzou Arena), including victories over Illinois, Oregon, Wichita State, Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee. Only five other teams nationally can say they have six Quad 1 wins: Ohio State, Gonzaga, Illinois, Alabama and Baylor. The Zags and Buckeyes are the only squads in the country with more Quad 1 victories than the Tigers.
- Mizzou has three wins over Top 10 teams (No. 10 Alabama, No. 6 Tennessee, No. 6 Illinois) in the same season for the first time since 2011-12. The Tigers boast four ranked wins and four true road victories, and four of their six losses have come against Quad 1 opponents.
- Mizzou is 6-0 against Quad 3 and Quad 4 teams.
- Mizzou is 7-6 all-time vs. South Carolina and 2-4 all-time in Columbia East. The Tigers last win at South Carolina was a 79-68 victory in Martin's first season at the helm. Cuonzo is 8-2 in his career vs. South Carolina.
- After downing the Gamecocks, 81-70, earlier this season on Jan. 19, 2021, Mizzou is looking for a two-game regular season sweep over South Carolina for the first time since 2013. In the home triumph over the Gamecocks a month ago, senior Jeremiah Tilmon, Jr., dominated with 19 points, 10 boards, three steals and three blocks. Tilmon, Jr., will return to action Saturday after missing a pair of games last week while taking a leave of absence following a death in his family.
- Mizzou is coming off three consecutive losses for the first time since Jan. 18-Jan. 25, 2020 (at Alabama, vs. Texas A&M and at West Virginia).
- From December of 2013 until Cuonzo Martin's first year at the helm, Mizzou hadn't beaten a ranked opponent in more than 1,500 days. Mizzou has four alone this season and the Tigers are 8-6 against ranked teams under Martin.
- Mizzou checks in at No. 20 in the AP Top 25 poll. That gives Mizzou 10 consecutive weeks in the Top 25 (the 14th-longest streak nationally).
- Mizzou is 5-1 in games decided by five or fewer points this season.
- In Tilmon's absence, sophomore Kobe Brown is coming off a career-high 21-point performance vs. Georgia, asserting himself as a matchup problem for both guards and bigs. Brown is just the fifth different Tiger sophomore to reach the 20-point plateau during the Martin era. He became the fourth different Tiger this season to surpass the 20-point mark alongside Tilmon, Dru Smith and Xavier Pinson.
- Dru is once again proving to be a menace on defense, ranking second in the SEC in steals with 1.9 per game. His 166 career steals ranks 33rd among all active Division I players. Dru also ranks 16th in the SEC in scoring, ninth in assists and third in free throw percentage.
- In its 13 wins, Mizzou has averaged 76.8 points, while shooting 46.7 percent from the field.
BROWN & BRAUN
- Mizzou's two youngest rotational players, sophomore Kobe Brown and redshirt sophomore Parker Braun, have stepped up of late, despite the Tigers' three-game skid.
- Over the last four games Kobe has averaged 12.3 points and 6.5 boards while shooting 54.1 percent from the field and swatting four shots. Before that stretch, he was putting up just 6.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest while shooting 42.2 percent and swatting four total shots in the season's first 15 games. Brown exploded for a career-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting at Georgia, becoming the fourth different Tiger with 20+ in a game this season.
- Braun (pronounced Brown) had played just 86 total minutes in the Tigers' first 15 games. In the last four. he's played 66 minutes, tossing in 19 combined points on 7-of-9 shooting while racking up six blocks and eight rebounds. Braun contributed seven points, a career-best three assists and a season-high three blocks at Georgia. He's averaging 6.0 points over the last three games. His brother, Christian, plays for Kansas, and his mother, uncle and aunt all played college hoops at Mizzou.
