COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri senior running back Tyler Badie has been named the SEC Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year by a vote of the league's head coaches, it was announced Thursday.
Badie is the first Missouri student-athlete to earn SEC Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors. Additionally, three Tigers earned spots on the USA Today All-SEC team.
Badie earned his bachelor's degree in sport management earlier this year with a 3.83 grade point average. He is in his first semester as a graduate student, pursuing a master's in athletic administration and positive coaching. A two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, he was a 2021 AFCA Good Works Team, Wuerffel Trophy and Campbell Trophy nominee.
A Doak Walker Award finalist, Badie set a new school record for single-season rushing yards (1,604). His touchdown at Arkansas was his 14th of the season and the 23rd of his career – good for ninth on Mizzou's single season and career top-10 lists.
As selected by the USA TODAY Network's team that covers the league, Badie, graduate center Michael Maietti and sophomore kicker Harrison Mevis earned spots on its All-SEC team. Badie is one of five student-athletes that were unanimous selections.
A 55-game career starter at center, Maietti anchors the offensive line that blocks for Badie, who leads the SEC in rushing attempts (268), yards (1,604), touchdowns (18) and yards per game (133.7).
Mevis, a two-time SEC Player of the Week in 2021, hit a career-long 56-yard boot to send the game to overtime at Boston College. He is now 3-for-3 on the season and 6-for-7 in his career from beyond 50 yards. On the season, Mevis is 20-of-22 in field goals, including 11-of-13 from 40-49.
