COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri wide receiver Barrett Banister is one of 88 student-athletes nominated for the Burlsworth Trophy, it was announced by the Burlsworth Trust on Tuesday.
In its 12th year, the Burlsworth Trophy is given to the most outstanding college football player who began his career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field. Each nominee must have begun his first season of participation with a Division I FBS football program without financial aid of any kind from his University's athletic department.
Barrett Banister arrived in Columbia in June 2017 as a preferred walk-on. He was awarded a scholarship by former Mizzou head coach Barry Odom at the end of the 2018 season.
Banister's playing time has been productive but limited due to injury. He's played in seven games in 2021, missing the Texas A&M game (10/16). He totals 17 receptions for 124 yards with one touchdown (at Boston College). Eight of Banister's 17 receptions have been for first downs, including five that were part of scoring drives – three coming in the 37-28 win at Vanderbilt.
He had five catches for 44 yards, including a nine-yard score, at Boston College. Against the Eagles, his 19-yard catch moved the chains for Mizzou's 56-yard made field goal to force overtime.
Banister is a three-time SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll member. In addition to his role on offense, he has also played significant time on special teams, including all four punt units. Banister earned his bachelor's degree in sport management in spring 2021 and is pursuing a master's degree in athletic administration and positive coaching.
