Mizzou Basketball Game Notes
STORYLINES
- Mizzou bounced back from a loss to then-No. 7 Tennessee in convincing fashion, downing then-undefeated Arkansas, 81-68 on Saturday. That marked Mizzou's second win in Fayetteville since 1991 and the Tigers' largest margin of victory over Arkansas on the road since 1967.
- Head coach Cuonzo Martin's squad held Arkansas to its worst shooting game ever at Bud Walton Arena (26.8 percent). The Razorbacks entered the game ranked 10th nationally in rebound margin, but Mizzou won the battle on the glass by a +15 margin with a season-best 51 boards.
- Junior Xavier Pinson continued his knack for dominating Arkansas. With 23 points on Saturday, he has 81 combined points in five career games against the Razorbacks, including 20.7 points per game in the last three meetings.
- Mizzou has won eight of its past nine games dating to the 2019-20 season finale and is off to its best start since the 2013-14 squad launched the campaign 10-0.
- The Tigers have won all three of their games played away from home, including a neutral court win over ranked Oregon and true road victories over Wichita State and Arkansas. The last time Mizzou won its first three games away from home was 2013-14. The Tigers are seeking their third consecutive victory in true road games to start a season for the first time since 1994-95 (at Washington, at SMU and at No. 19 Nebraska).
- Mizzou is one of three teams nationally with a pair of ranked wins and a pair of true victories thus far, joining Villanova and Marquette. Only 12 total teams have multiple wins over ranked teams.
- Mizzou checked in at No. 10 nationally in the NCAA's first 2020-21 NET rankings. All eight of Mizzou's opponents are in the Top 125 as Mizzou boasts three Top 25 NET wins, five Top 70 wins and seven Top 125 wins. The Tigers are one of four teams nationally with four Quad 1 victories alongside Gonzaga, Illinois & Clemson.
- Mizzou is 5-9 all-time vs. Mississippi State and has won in Starkville just once in program history, a 78-36 win on Feb. 13, 2013. Mississippi State has won eight of the last nine meetings, sweeping the season series a year ago. Mizzou's last win over the Bulldogs was an 89-85 overtime victory at Mizzou Arena on Feb. 10, 2018.
- During non-conference play, Mizzou knocked off both No. 21 Oregon and No. 6 Illinois, and had five wins over teams in KenPom's Top 125 (Liberty, Wichita State, Bradley). The last time a Mizzou team racked up at least two Top 25 wins & a true road victory during non-conference play came during the 2011-12 campaign.
- After its historic start, Mizzou checked in at No. 12 in the AP Top 25 poll on Dec. 28, its highest ranking since Jan. 7, 2013 (No. 10). When Mizzou cracked the Top 25 on Dec. 14, it marked the first time the Tigers had been ranked during the Martin era and the first time since the 2013-14 campaign. The Tigers' fourth straight appearance in the poll on Jan. 4 (No. 13) matches the squad's longest streak during the 2013-14 season. Mizzou was ranked in 36 straight polls from November of 2011 to February of 2013.
TOUGH DEFENSE
- Mizzou is continuing its reputation of tough defense under Cuonzo Martin. Through eight games, Mizzou ranks 16th nationally and first in the SEC in 3-point field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 26.1 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Tigers are also 29th nationally and second in the SEC in field goal percentage defense (38.3 percent).
- Mizzou held Arkansas to season-lows for points scored (68) and field goal percentage (.268); it marked the fourth time in eight starts the Tigers have held their opponent to a season-low point total (ORU, at Wichita State, Liberty, at Arkansas) and the third time their defense has held the opponent to a season-low shooting from the floor (at WSU, Liberty, at Arkansas).
- Mizzou is 3-0 away from Columbia this season, in large part due to its performance at the defensive end of the court. The Tigers are holding opponents to 33.5 percent shooting from the field away from Mizzou Arena this season, including 28.4 percent from 3-point range, and 68.3 points per game. In its two "true" road games, Mizzou has held its opponent to season-lows in both points and field goal percentage, while in its lone neutral test it held Oregon to its second-lowest field goal percentage of the season.
- Mizzou has not allowed an opponent to reach the 80-point mark this season, and has held its foe to 79 or fewer points in 15-straight games and 37 of its last 39 overall. LSU (82) and Alabama (88) are the only teams to score more than 79 points against the Tigers in the last 39 games, both of which did so on their home floors a year ago.
- Mizzou held Arkansas to its worst shooting game ever at Bud Walton Arena at 26.8 percent in the Tigers' 81-68 win on Saturday. It marked the worst shooting game for a Tiger opponent in a conference game since Georgia shot just 25.5 percent from the floor in a 64-39 Mizzou win at Athens, March 6, 2019, and worst overall since Chicago State hit 24.4 percent in a 91-33 Mizzou win in Columbia, Dec. 30, 2019.
- In the previous three seasons before Cuonzo's arrival, Mizzou won 27 total games, 0 against ranked teams and 0 true road games. Eight games into his fourth season on campus, Martin has won 57 total games, six against ranked opponents and racked up 11 true road wins.
