Mizzou Basketball Game Notes
STORYLINES
- Mizzou returned to action after a two-game pause due to COVID-19 protocols with a resounding 68-52 win at Texas A&M. It marked the Tigers' third true road win of the season - all by double-digits. The last time Mizzou had three true road victories by a double-digit margin in an entire season was 2006-07.
- Mizzou has now won four games away from home, including a neutral site victory over ranked Oregon. Saturday's win at Texas A&M marked the Tigers' third true road win by Jan. 16 for the first time since the 1994-95 squad won three true road games by Jan. 7.
- Mizzou is one of five teams nationally with four Quad 1 NET wins thus far, joining No. 2 Gonzaga, No. 3 Iowa, No. 27 Minnesota and No. 38 Oklahoma State. The Tigers check in at No. 24 in the latest NET rankings. Nine of Mizzou's 10 opponents are in the NET's Top 125. Mizzou boasts three Top 35 NET wins and five Top 75 wins.
- Only six teams nationally have at least two ranked wins and three true road wins: Baylor, Iowa, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Marquette and Mizzou. Only 19 total teams have multiple wins over ranked teams.
- Mizzou checked in at No. 19 in the Jan. 18 AP Top 25 poll. That marks six consecutive weeks for the Tigers in the poll, their longest streak since 2013-14. All six weeks have included Mizzou in the Top 20.
- Mizzou and South Carolina's series is deadlocked at 6-6, with the Gamecocks winning last year's lone affair in Columbia East, 76-54. The two squads have traded blows recently, with neither team claiming consecutive wins in the series since 2016. Despite the tight series, each of the last five meetings have been decided by double-digits.
- Dating to his days at Tennessee, Mizzou's Cuonzo Martin is 7-2 all-time vs. the Gamecocks.
- Mizzou's defense continues to be stifling. The Tigers held Texas A&M to 52 points, its lowest output of the season. Five of Mizzou's 10 opponents have scored their season-low against the Tigers.
- The Tigers have allowed just 5.4 made threes per game, driving opponents off the line to the waiting Jeremiah Tilmon, Jr., who swatted three shots at Texas A&M and has 84 career blocks - five shy of ninth all-time at Mizzou. The Tigers are one of just four teams nationally to play in at least 10 games and only allow 54 or fewer total 3-pointers this season. Teams are shooting just 27.3 percent from beyond the arc against Mizzou.
- Tilmon, Jr., has dominant of late, riding perhaps the best stretch of his career to open SEC play. He's shooting a league-best 74 percent from the floor while averaging 16.0 points (11th in the SEC) and 7.8 boards (fourth in the SEC) per game during SEC action. In the last five outings, Tilmon has three double-doubles, four double-figure scoring games and a game-winning bucket.
- Junior Javon Pickett once again proved himself crucial to Mizzou's success. The Tigers are 11-1 over the last two seasons when he scores in double figures after his 12-point outing at Texas A&M.
- Mizzou has won nine of its past 11 games dating to the 2019-20 season finale and is off to its best start since the 2013-14 squad launched the campaign 10-0.
MARTIN STYLE DEFENSE
- Mizzou improved to 27-0 in the Cuonzo Martin era when holding opponents to 59 or fewer points after limiting the Aggies to just 52 on Saturday - their lowest output of the season.
- Mizzou is continuing its reputation of tough, hard-nosed defense under Martin. Through 10 games, Mizzou ranks 13th nationally and first in the SEC in 3-point field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 27.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc. Opponents are making just 5.4 3-pointers per game.
- Mizzou held Arkansas to season-lows for points scored (68) and field goal percentage (.268); the Tigers have held five opponents to a season-low point total (ORU, at Wichita State, Liberty, at Arkansas, at Texas A&M) and their defense has held the opponent to a season-low shooting from the floor three times (at WSU, Liberty, at Arkansas).
- Mizzou has not allowed an opponent to reach the 80-point mark this season, and has held its foe to 79 or fewer points in 17-straight games and 39 of its last 41 overall. LSU (82) and Alabama (88) are the only teams to score more than 79 points against the Tigers in the last 41 games, both of which did so on their home floors a year ago.
- Mizzou held Arkansas to its worst shooting game ever at Bud Walton Arena at 26.8 percent in the Tigers' 81-68 win on Jan. 2. It marked the worst shooting game for a Tiger opponent in a conference game since Georgia shot just 25.5 percent from the floor in a 64-39 Mizzou win at Athens, March 6, 2019, and worst overall since Chicago State hit 24.4 percent in a 91-33 Mizzou win in Columbia, Dec. 30, 2019.
- The Tigers are holding opponents to 39.4 percent shooting from the floor, which trails only Tennessee in the SEC and ranks 36th nationally.
- Mizzou is also cleaning up on the glass, thanks in large part to Jeremiah Tilmon, Jr. Mizzou is 6-0 this season and 45 of the Tigers' 58 wins during the Martin-era have come when they have won the rebounding battle.
