Mizzou Football ushered in a new era Saturday (March 7), holding the initial spring practice under first year head coach Eliah Drinkwitz on the Kadlec Practice Fields. The energy was high at the #NewZou, sparked by the opportunity for the new coaching staff to see the full roster in action for the first time on the field, and see how the team responded to coaching. Overall, Drinkwitz was pleased with both his team and his coaching staff during the spring's first practice.
"First day; it was good to get out here and see guys move around with the football and see how guys respond to coaching," Drinkwitz said after meeting with reporters Saturday. "It's always a little different when you are interacting with guys and correcting mistakes and having constructive criticism. It was good for our players and coaches to see what that feels like. I told the guys that no matter what today was like, we have to improve on Monday."
Drinkwitz and his staff have three primary goals for the team this spring as they jump into action with the team for the first time. The first is individual development - improving fundamentals and technique of each player on the roster. Football is a game a discipline and work, and the first spring practice placed an emphasis on on those fundamentals whiledoing the little things correctly. Drinkwitz belives that that is the first step to success. The second goal that Coach Drinkwitz hopes his team can work towards during the spring training period is the laying of the foundation for all three areas of the game - offense, defense and special teams. Lastly, Coach Drinkwitz has a chance to see his team in action which allows him and his staff to identify the strengths and weaknesses of this year's team, and build a plan around those.
"Our No. 1 core value is always compete," Drinkwitz said. "The only thing better than a little competition is a lot of competition."
Mizzou will be back on the practice field Monday afternoon (March 9) for the second of 15 scheduled spring practices. Mizzou's annual Spring Game will be held April 11 at Memorial Stadium and is slated for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
