COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou gymnastics freshman Helen Hu (Chicago, Ill.) earned her sixth weekly honor from the Southeastern Conference this season as she was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Tuesday. The award marks her third consecutive Freshman of the Week accolade and her fourth overall this season, to go along with two Specialist of the Week honors earlier this year.
Hu won three titles with two career-high scores as Mizzou earned a 196.450-195.925 road win over No. 19 Nebraska on March 7. The freshman won the beam title outright and tied for the all-around and bars crowns to up her season total to a team-high 15 wins, the most for a Tiger since the 2014 season. She tallied career-best scores of 39.525 in the all-around and 9.875 on vault, to go along with a 9.95 on beam, 9.9 on bars and 9.8 on floor. Hu's nine scores of 9.9 or better on beam in 2020 ties Mizzou's individual single-season record for 9.9s on one event. Three former Tigers share the record, Sarah Shire on vault in 2010, Alisha Robinson on vault in 2004 and Lauren Schwartzman on beam in 2004.
She currently ranks fifth nationally on beam with a National Qualifying Score (NQS) of 9.550 and is tied for 11th on bars with a 9.910 NQS.
The No. 14 Mizzou gymnastics team closes the regular season on Saturday, March 14 when the team travels to Athens, Ga., to take on No. 12 Georgia on Saturday, March 4 at 3 p.m. CT.
