TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Mizzou Women's Basketball (8-21, 5-11 SEC) dropped its regular season finale on Sunday afternoon, as the Tigers fell to Alabama (18-11, 8-8 SEC), 71-63, at the Coleman Coliseum. Mizzou was led by the duo of freshman guard Aijha Blackwell (Berkeley, Mo.) and senior guard Amber Smith (Shreveport, La.), who each recorded 20-point games with 23 and 20 points, respectively.
TURNING POINT
Mizzou struggled again in a tough third quarter, as a three-point deficit became an eight-point deficit as the Crimson Tide outscored Mizzou, 21-16 in the third period. Alabama guard Megan Abrams led the charge with a team-high seven points in the quarter. With a 55-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter, Alabama never let Mizzou get closer than six points in the final 10 minutes.
TOP TIGERS
- Blackwell recorded her third consecutive 20-point game, and her fourth consecutive double-double with team-highs in points (23) and rebounds (11). The Tiger freshman also led Mizzou in assists (four) and blocks (two).
- Smith recorded her sixth 20-point game of the season with 20 points and three assists.
- Senior guard Jordan Chavis (Lexington, N.C.) scored nine points and drained two three-pointers in the game.
NOTES
- Mizzou matched a single-game program record by shooting 100 percent (13-of-13) from the free throw line, the third time in program history Mizzou has shot 100 percent from the charity stripe (min. 10 made). Mizzou also recorded perfect nights from the free throw line against Oklahoma on Jan. 28, 2004 (21-of-21) and against North Florida on Nov. 20, 2011 (10-of-10).
- Blackwell continued her remarkable streak of effective play, as she recorded her third consecutive 20-point game and fourth consecutive double-double (sixth in seven games) with a team-high 23 points and 11 rebounds.
- With 23 points, Blackwell became the first Mizzou freshman to score 20 points in three consecutive games since Julie Helm did so in the 1995-96 season (24 points vs. Kansas State, 1-31-96; 25 points vs. Kansas, 2-4-96; 20 points at Colorado, 2-10-96). It was Blackwell's eighth 20-point game of the season, her 22nd time scoring in double figures, and the 12th time she has led Mizzou in scoring this season.
- Blackwell's 23 points and 11 rebounds was her fourth consecutive, sixth in seven games and seventh overall double-double of the season.
- Blackwell's 11 rebounds marked the seventh time this season she has grabbed 10 or more rebounds and the 25th time she has had 5+ rebounds.
- Among freshmen program records, Blackwell moved to second in free throws made (113), third in field goals made (146) and fifth in three-pointers made (32).
- Smith produced her sixth 20-point game of the season and 12th of her career with 20 points. It also marked the 18th time this season and the 58th time in her career she has scored in double figures.
- Chavis drained two three-pointers in the game, marking the 18th time this season and the 41st time in her career she has made multiple three-pointers in a game.
- Freshman forward Hayley Frank (Strafford, Mo.) recorded a career-high four steals in the game, surpassing her previous high of three against Green Bay (Nov. 16).
UP NEXT
Mizzou will now move to postseason play, as the Tigers will be the No. 11 seed at the 2020 SEC Tournament. Mizzou will play Ole Miss at approximately 12:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, March 4 at the Bon Secours Arena in Greenville, S.C.
