AUBURN, Ala. - The Mizzou men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished fifth (846.5 points) and eighth (500 points), respectively, at the 2020 Southeastern Conference Championships, held at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center in Auburn, Ala. The Tigers closed the meet with four individual top eight finishes on Saturday.
The Florida men (1,194 points) and Tennessee women (1,108 points) won the team titles.
TOP TIGERS
Mizzou's top eight finishes on Saturday came from a pair of freshmen and a pair of seniors.
Freshman Will Goodwin (Centennial, Colo.) made his first A final in the 200 breast, where he swam 1:56.46 in the evening session to take eighth.
In the diving well, freshman Maddie Huitt (Gibsonia, Pa.) secured a spot in the championship final with a prelims tally of 261.15. She then scored 234.7 points to place eighth overall in the event.
Seniors Nick Alexander (St. Louis, Mo.) and Daniel Hein (Sycamore, Ill.) gave the Tigers two top eight finishers in the men's 200 back. Alexander, who went a season-best 1:40.58 in prelims, took seventh in 1:42.66, and Hein placed eighth with a time of 1:44.77. Hein also recorded a season-best in morning prelims, a 1:42.24.
Sophomore Jack Dahlgren (Victoria, Minn.) added a ninth-place finish in the 200 back as he won the consolation final in 1:42.14. All six Tigers who entered the men's 200 back scored.
In the women's race, senior Jennifer King (Glasgow, Scotland) out-touched junior Sarah Thompson (Collierville, Tenn.) in the consolation final. King finished ninth overall in 1:53.43, only a hundredth of a second off her career-best set at last year's SEC Championships. Thompson was 10th in 1:53.51.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Andrew Grevers
"We had a good morning and put ourselves in good spots tonight. We definitely had some great swims and dives tonight, winning some B and C finals. The people that got themselves in the top eight took care of it in the morning, so it was a well-executed day. I'm really pleased to finish the meet on a high note. We're going to get back to work and focus on NCAAs, but all in all, I'm really pleased with our performance here at the SEC Championships."
