Mizzou Men’s Hoops Drops Tight Contest at Arkansas, 78-68

Freshman Kobe Brown finished with a career-high 17 points and 10 boards

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Freshman Kobe Brown secured his first career double-double to lead three Tigers in double figures, but the effort wasn't enough, as Arkansas' hot-shooting fueled its 78-68 win on Saturday afternoon in Fayetteville.

Brown poured in a career-high 17 points and grabbed a career-best 10 boards in 28 minutes. Redshirt junior guard Dru Smith added 15 points and eight rebounds, and sophomore Xavier Pinson tallied 15 points, seven assists and six rebounds.

Mizzou shot 43 percent from the field and outrebounded the Razorbacks, 36-23. Arkansas countered with outside shooting, making a season-high 12 three-pointers on 25 attempts led by Isaiah Joe's 5-of-10 effort from beyond the arc.

Turning Point:

With Arkansas up 71-63 with less than two minutes to play, redshirt junior Mitchell Smith drained a pair of free throws. Then on the ensuing possession, Dru Smith nabbed a steal and finished an old-fashioned 3-point play to give Mizzou five points in nine seconds and cut the deficit to three.

The Razorbacks raced down the court and Joe buried a clutch trey to silence Mizzou's run and push Arkansas' lead back to six. The deep triple effectively halted the Tigers' momentum as Arkansas staved off another run in the final minute.

Top Tigers:

  • Kobe Brown contributed a team-high 17 points, 10 rebounds and a steal in 28 minutes.
  • Dru Smith reached double figures for the fifth straight game and the 15-point mark for the fourth consecutive contest with 15 points, eight rebounds and two assists.
  • Xavier Pinson reached double figures for the 11th time this season and for the fourth time in the last five games with 15 points. He matched his career high with seven assists.
  • Torrence Watson chipped in seven points off the bench, hitting two 3-pointers for the first time since Jan. 25.

Notes

  • Brown is the just the second freshman to secure a double-double in league play since 2016, joining Jontay Porter. He is just the second Tiger with a double-double in SEC action this season, alongside Reed Nikko. Both Brown and Nikko did so against Arkansas.
  • Pinson continued his strong play offensively, and is now averaging 21.6 points per game over the last five contests. He's also dished at least five assists in three of his last four games.
  • Mizzou lost just its fifth game this season when outrebounding its opponent.
