COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Track and Field is set for a pair of national meets this weekend as the Tigers will send groups to the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. and the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. After a dominant performance in the Mizzou Open last friday, the team hits the road as the 2020 indoor season continues to progress.
Mizzou returns to the Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas for the second time in three weeks after competing at the Razorback Invitational on January 31 and February 1. Meanwhile, a portion of the Mizzou distance squad will head to Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Classic. Both meets begin on Friday and conclude with a second day of action on Saturday.
In Fayetteville, the Tigers will be led by a number of top performers from the Razorback Invitational. Redshirt sophomore sprinter Jayson Ashford (Fairview Heights, Ill.) posted a new top-10 program mark in the 400m dash while junior Nylo Clarke (Riverside, Mo.) also moved into the record books with a strong performance in the 200m dash in Fayetteville two weeks ago. Clarke will be back in action for the first time since the Razorback Invitational.
Mizzou will also deploy its top group of jumpers as redshirt junior Ja'Mari Ward (Cahokia, Ill.) and Roberto Vilches (Mexico City, Mexico) will both compete in their top events for the first time since the Aggie Invitational on January 25. On the women's side, the Tigers boast a strong group of triple jumpers with freshman Mara Hausler (Stralsund, Germany), freshman Euphenie Andre (Dover Plains N.Y. and sophomore Arianna Fisher (San Jose, Calif.). The trio hold three of the top four spots in the Mizzou program top-10.
As a whole, the field event group is poised to do damage in Fayetteville. Fresh off of a top-5 program performance last week, senior high jumper Karissa Roman (Kewanee, Ill.)) will jump at the Tyson Invitational. Meanwhile, Mizzou's top weight throwers, redshirt senior Patrick Kunza (Wentzville, Mo.) and redshirt senior Jordan McClendon (Black Jack, Mo.) lead the Black and Gold throws group. McClendon has totaled four victories in the weight throw this season while Kunza earned wins in both of his last two appearances.
In Ames, Mizzou's top group of distance runners will be in action. Redshirt senior Thomas George (Gloucester, England) is scheduled to run the 5000m after posting a new Mizzou program record in the indoor 3000m run at the Razorback Invitational two weeks ago. George currently holds the fifth-fastest time in the 5000m run, set during the 2017-18 season.
Junior Sarah Chapman (Maidenhead, England) is set to run the 3000m after moving into the program top-10 ranks with a strong performance in the mile in Fayetteville on February 1.
The Tyson Invitational will feature 10 men's squads ranked within the top-25 nationally while the women's side will feature seven. Action begins on Friday at 1 p.m. with field events and 3 p.m. with running events. On Saturday, field events start at 11:30 a.m. with running events occupying a 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. time frame. At the Iowa State Classic, track events begin at noon on both Friday and Saturday.
