Mizzou Basketball Game Notes
STORYLINES
- Mizzou Men's Basketball is coming off an 83-75 victory over No. 21 Oregon, the Tigers' first victory over an AP Top 25 team away from home since beating No. 12 Illinois on Dec. 22, 2012. Mizzou improved to 6-0 all-time vs. Oregon and 128-80 all-time vs. Pac-12 opponents.
- Mizzou has won five games against Top 25 teams under head coach Cuonzo Martin.
- The win over Oregon came after a fourth-straight season-opening victory - a 91-64 win over Oral Roberts. The Tigers have won their season-opening contests by 23.8 points per game during the Martin-era.
- Mizzou is seeking its first 3-0 start since the 2013-14 season when it opened 10-0, and 51st such start in 115 seasons of intercollegiate hoops competition. Mizzou hasn't scored 83 or more points in 3-straight games since a 3-game stretch late in the 2012-13 season & hasn't opened a season with three such efforts since 2009-10.
- Mizzou is 3-0 all-time vs. Wichita State, but haven't faced the Shockers since 1951. This is the first ever meeting between the two programs in Wichita, with all three occurring at Brewer Fieldhouse in Columbia. Mizzou is 3-1 under Martin against AAC programs, beating Temple on the road last year and sweeping a 2-game series with UCF.
- For all but 45 seconds over the season's first two games, Mizzou has either played with the lead or been tied. Against ORU, the Tigers never trailed and were tied just once (11-all), while against Oregon they trailed for just 45 seconds early in the game. Mizzou's largest deficit was three points in the first half against the Ducks.
- After scoring 19 second-half points en route to a team-high 22-point performance vs. No. 21 Oregon, Xavier Pinson has averaged 19.6 points over his last nine games while producing eight double-figure scoring games in that span, four of which have been 20-point or better efforts.
- Mizzou shot a blistering 53.1 percent from the field and hit 10 3-pointers en route to its 27-point victory over ORU. The Tigers followed by shooting 46.2 percent vs. Oregon and scoring 83 points, the most the Ducks have allowed in nonconference play since Nov. 26, 2018 (Texas Southern - 89 points).
- Martin brings back one of the most experienced rosters in all of college basketball. Mizzou welcomes back 88.13 percent of its scoring from a season ago, which ranks third among all Power 5 conference teams, trailing only Texas and UCLA. The returners are responsible for 98.9 percent of Mizzou's points through two games.
- The veteran roster features three players with 700+ career points (Dru Smith, Jeremiah Tilmon and Drew Buggs) and five with 500+ career points (Smith, Tilmon, Buggs, Xavier Pinson and Mark Smith).
- Mizzou's 12-man roster features nine players with at least junior eligibility standing and one of the remaining three players entering his third season on campus in Parker Braun, making Mizzou the SEC's oldest team.
- With freshman center 7-foot-3 Jordan Wilmore joining the squad, Mizzou enters the season with an average height of 6-foot-6. That makes the Tigers the SEC's tallest team in 2020-21 and the ninth-tallest team nationally.
EFFICIENT, BALANCED START
- Thru two games, Mizzou's bench has provided an average of 23.0 points per game, the bulk of which have come from junior Javon Pickett who has produced a pair of double-figure scoring efforts off the pine. Pickett had 11 points in 20 minutes vs. ORU in the season-opener, then netted 13 in 21 minutes against No. 21 Oregon. Mizzou is 9-1 over the last two seasons when Pickett scores in double figures.
- Mizzou has an assist to turnover ratio of 1.5 thru two games this season, and is 23-8 in the Martin-era when having a positive assist to turnover ratio in a game.
- Mizzou has made at least one 3-point field goal in a school-record 412-consecutive games since an 0-for-10 effort at Kansas, Feb. 4, 2008. In fact, the Tigers have hit at least one trifecta in 939 of their last 941 outings (at KU in 2008, vs. Southern Cal in 1995), a run that started with their Big 8 Tournament championship win over Nebraska, and in 1,093 of 1,103 all-time games played since the 3-point shot was introduced prior to the 1986-87 season. Mizzou made at least nine triples in a game just five times last season, and the Tigers have already made 19 trifectas through two games in 2020-21, making 10 vs. Oral Roberts and nine vs. No. 21 Oregon.
- Mizzou has scored 87 points per game out of the gate, which ranks second among all SEC teams, and is shooting 49.6 percent from the field, which trails only Florida, LSU and Georgia through a week of action.
- The Tigers rank second in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.46). Mizzou committed just seven turnovers vs. No. 21 Oregon, marking just the 17th time in the last decade the Ducks have forced seven or fewer turnovers in a game. It also marked just the fifth game in the Martin-era with seven or fewer Mizzou turnovers.
- Mizzou closed out the win over Oregon with clutch free throws. The Tigers are 9-of-12 with five minutes or less on the clock at the foul line this season. Mizzou shot a school-record 78 percent from the charity stripe as a team last season and Martin's squad is picking up where it left off, shooting 77.1 percent at the line through the 2020-21 season's first two games.
- Mizzou's defense has also been strong, holding ORU and Oregon to 38 percent shooting from the field and 25 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Tigers' 3-point field goal percentage defense ranks 30th nationally among teams who have played multiple games (44th overall).
