Goalkeeper made first appearance in relief on Sunday
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mizzou Soccer's Sophia Worth has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Worth, a Denver, Colo., native made her first career appearance on Sunday, despite entering the week as Mizzou's third-string goalkeeper. After McKenna Sheehan exited the match in the 10th minute, Worth played the final 80:10 for the Tigers to down Florida, 5-2.
The freshman entered with the match tied 1-1, and she would hold the Gators to one goal on 14 shots over the final 80 minutes to help Mizzou grab a win and three points. The 14 shots were the third-most faced by a Mizzou keeper this season, while Worth's eight saves was a season high for any Mizzou keeper this season.
Worth is the first Tiger to be honored as the conference's Freshman of the Week since Julissa Cisneros (Oct. 7, 2018). She is only the second goalkeeper in the conference to receive the honor this season.
The win propelled Mizzou from ninth in the SEC standings up to fifth – the best finish since finishing fifth in 2016.
The Tigers will open play at the 2020 SEC Soccer Tournament on Sunday, in Orange Beach, Ala. Seeded fifth, Mizzou received a first round and will play the winner of Kentucky-Florida at 7:30 p.m. CT.
