Mizzou Men’s Hoops Falls to Mississippi State, 72-45

Kobe Brown scored a career-high 14 points in the loss

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Men's Basketball fell on the road to Mississippi State, 72-45, Tuesday night in Starkville, Miss. The Bulldogs jumped on top 10-0 early and never trailed, shooting 54.5 percent from the field.

Freshman Kobe Brown was the lone Tiger in double figures with a career-high 14 points to go along with four rebounds. Sophomore Javon Pickett added nine points on 4-of-8 shooting and junior guard Mark Smith chipped in eight points. Redshirt junior guard Dru Smith tallied four rebounds, three assists, three steals and two points.  

Mississippi State capitalized on early Mizzou turnovers and got out to a hot start offensively to build a 19-5 lead by the 11:06 mark in the opening half. The Bulldogs would extend their lead to 20 by the break and never trail by fewer than 15 for the remainder of the game.

TURNING POINT

On an out-of-bounds play with 12:58 left in the second half, senior Reed Nikko flushed home a dunk to cut Mizzou's deficit to 46-31. The Tigers had outscored the Bulldogs 11-6 in the second frame and seemed to be seizing back momentum.

Mississippi State answered though, with a game-sealing 14-3 run led by Reggie Perry, who finished with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds.

TOP TIGERS

  • Kobe Brown finished with career-high 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting and added four boards. It marked his second career game in double figures and his first since Nov. 8 vs. Northern Kentucky.
  • Mark Smith made 3-of-6 field goals to finish with eight points and three rebounds.
  • Javon Pickett scored nine points on 4-of-8 shooting in just 19 minutes while dealing with foul trouble.

NOTES

  • Mizzou entered the night leading the SEC in steals per game with 2.3. He finished with three steals at Mississippi State. Smith has collected at least three steals in four of the last five games with 17 total thefts in that span.
  • Redshirt freshman Parker Braun matched his career-high with four points and added a block, a steal and a rebound in five minutes.
  • Mark Smith has made a triple in 13 of 16 games this season and in 31 of 35 games in his Mizzou career.

Mizzou continues its two-game road swing with a trip to Alabama on Saturday. The Tigers face off the with Crimson Tide on at 2:30 p.m. CT on the SEC Network. It will mark the 14th all-time meeting between the two programs.
