COLUMBIA, Mo. - For the fifth time this season, Mizzou gymnastics freshman Helen Hu (Chicago, Ill.) earned weekly honors for the Southeastern Conference, as she was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Tuesday. Hu previously claimed Freshman of the Week honors on Jan. 7 and Feb. 25 and Specialist of the Week accolades on Jan. 21 and Jan. 28.
Hu won three titles as Mizzou finished first in a quad meet against No. 11 Minnesota, Ohio State and Lindenwood on Feb. 28. She took home the all-around, beam and bars titles to up her team-leading total to 12 on the season, with six on beam, four on bars and two in the all-around. She tied career-bests in both the all-around (39.475) and on beam (9.975) to go along with scores of 9.875 on bars and 9.8 on vault in the meet. The 9.975 marked the second week in a row Hu tallied that score, which stands tied for the third-best beam individual total in the record books. She also stands as only the second Tiger in program history with two scores of 9.975 or higher on the event, joining Lauren Schwartzman (2003-06), who did it three times.
Overall, Hu ranks fifth nationally on beam with a National Qualifying Score (NQS) of 9.945 NQS and is tied for 12th on bars with a 9.905 NQS.
The No. 16 Mizzou gymnastics team travels to Lincoln, Neb., to take on No. 19 Nebraska on Saturday, March 7 at 7 p.m. CT.
