Mizzou hosts the inaugural meet at the brand-new Gans Creek Cross Country Course
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Cross Country will host its first home meet on its own course in five seasons on Friday with the grand opening of the new Gans Creek Cross Country Course. The course will serve as the Tiger's new home course and will also host various levels of competition throughout the season. The team will take on ten teams from around the country, including SEC opponent, Texas A&M.
The City of Columbia will host a dedication of the course beginning at 4:15 P.M. CT. Shortly after, the women are scheduled to begin their 6000m race at 5:00 P.M. CT, with the men following with the 8000m race at 5:30 P.M. CT.
Both the men and women look to repeat the dominant performances at the Commodore Classic, where the Mizzou women finished fourth and the men in fifth. Leading the Mizzou men, redshirt senior Thomas George (Gloucester, England) and senior Kieran Wood (Cambridge, England) landed top-15 finishes. The women placed a pack of runners in the top-25, including junior Sarah Chapman (Maidenhead, England) who finished 11th overall and freshman Jenna Schwartz (Waterloo, Illinois) who was the highest finishing freshman, earning her SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
On the men's side, a familiar batch of runners will compete on Friday, including George, redshirt junior Dylan Quisenberry (Wildwood, Mo.), sophomore Oaklee Hauschild (Blue Springs, Mo.) and redshirt freshman Victor Mugeche (Blue Springs, Mo.)
The Mizzou women will send 31 runners to the starting line on Friday, hoping to showcase their depth as a team. The lineup consists of veterans such as senior Melissa Menghini (Fenton, Mo.), redshirt senior Hannah Thomas (Urbandale, Iowa) and redshirt senior Jordyn Kleve (Urbandale, Iowa). However, newcomers Schwartz and freshman Ginger Murnieks (Lee's Summit, Mo.) have both logged dominant performances so far this season, and will look to continue that success.
The Gans Creek Classic is the second home meet of the season for the Tigers. To finish out the regular season, Mizzou will head to Madison, Wis. for the Nuttycombe Invitational and Peoria, Ill. for the Bradley Pink Classic on Friday October 18. Mizzou will then head into post season competition with the SEC Championships on Friday November 1 in Lexington, Ken.
