Duo among a record 585 student-athletes nominated
INDIANAPOLIS – Mizzou Athletics student-athletes Sophie Cunningham (women's basketball) and Gabi Jacobs (women's track & field) have been nominated for the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year award, announced Wednesday by the NCAA. The duo are among a record 585 student-athletes nominated across all three divisions of the NCAA.
Established in 1991, the NCAA Woman of the Year award recognizes graduating female college student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
Conferences will select up to two nominees each from the pool of school nominees. Then, the Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the Top 30 honorees — 10 from each division. The selection committee will determine the top three honorees from each division from the Top 30 and announce the nine finalists in September. From those nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then will choose the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year.
The Top 30 honorees will be celebrated and the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named at the annual award ceremony Oct. 20 in Indianapolis.
During her senior campaign, Cunningham earned All-America Third Team honors from the AP and USBWA, in addition to Honorable Mention Honors from the WBCA. She was named to her third straight All-SEC First Team by the league's coaches, becoming the first player in program history to earn All-Conference First Team honors in three consecutive seasons.
Cunningham closed her collegiate career as Mizzou's all-time scoring leader, finishing with 2,187 points. Among program records, Cunningham ranks first in free throws made (537), second in three-pointers made (238), third in three-point percentage (40.3), third in free throw percentage (83.9), fourth in points per game (17.0) and fourth in assists (390).
Jacobs earned All-America honors for a third consecutive season with an eighth-place finish in the discus at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 8. With her third All-America nod, Jacobs is one of 16 female student-athletes in program history to earn three or more All-America honors and one of seven to earn three or more All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor meet. Jacobs is the only Mizzou student-athlete to ever earn multiple discus All-America honors.
Jacobs concluded her illustrious Mizzou career as a three-time All-American, three-time SEC champion, Mizzou's school record holder in the discus, and program top-10 marks in the indoor and outdoor shot put. In addition to being the only multiple-time All-American in the discus, Jacobs is the only multiple-time conference champion in the event, and only one of 12 female student-athletes to record three or more conference titles in program history
