Rory Franssen finished 2nd overall out of 75 competitors
Awendaw, S.C. – Mizzou Men's Golf wrapped up an impressive week at the famed Hootie at Bull's Bay tournament on Tuesday as the Tigers finished fourth out of 15 teams, firing a 7-under 857 (279-296-282) as a team. In the process, Mizzou bested five teams ranked in the Top-50 nationally, including No. 4 Duke.
Head coach Mark Leroux's squad has now secured six Top-5 team finishes in nine tournaments during the 2018-19 campaign and back-to-back Top-4 performances. The Tigers' solid weekend at The Hootie was anchored by a 9-under 279 in the opening round and a 6-under 282 in Tuesday's final round.
Junior Rory Franssen finished second out of a loaded field that included 75 competitors, to lead Mizzou. It matched the best individual finish of his career and his best since placing second at the Tigers' season-opening tournament in September of 2017, the Turning Stone Intercollegiate.
Franssen fired a 10-under par 206, carding three consecutive rounds under par to secure his Top-2 finish. It marked his lowest 54-hole score since shooting a 205 as a freshman at the Suntrust Gator Invite. His outstanding week was catapulted by a career-low 67 in the opening round and he followed with a 69 and a 70 in rounds two and three, respectively. Following Franssen's performance, Mizzou has now had a Tiger finish seventh or better in six tournaments this season.
Sophomore Jamie Stewart continued his strong sophomore campaign, tying for 16th. He fired a 2-under 214, paced by a 4-under 68 in the opening round on Sunday. Stewart now has eight Top-20 individual finishes in nine tournaments in 2018-19.
Freshman Tommy Boone tied for 42nd overall, carding a 4-over 220 for the tournament. Boone ended strong, completing the best round of his young career on Tuesday. The freshman fired a career-low 5-under 67, playing bogey-free golf while racking up five birdies.
Seniors Matt Echelmeier and Luigi Botta tied for 56th and 60th, respectively. Echelmeier shot a 6-over par 222 to round out the Tigers' scoring, sandwiching a tough second round with a 2-under 70 on Sunday and a 1-under 71 in Tuesday's final round.
