COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Softball (12-11, 1-4) toppled No. 8 Georgia (25-5, 1-1) in Columbia on Saturday afternoon, downing the Dawgs 7-3. The win marks the Tigers' first SEC win of the season and second win over a top-15 opponent.
Sophomore RF Brooke Wilmes was phenomenal for the Tigers, going 3-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored on the day. She also made a spectacular diving catch in the top of the seventh to help close out the Dawgs. Sophomore P Cassie Gasper rebounded well, pitching the third complete game of her career, all of which have been wins. Gasper held the Bulldogs to just three runs and four hits on the day. She also added to her impressive outing with two strikeouts.
TOP TIGERS
- With her three doubles against Georgia, Wilmes tied the Mizzou record for most doubles in an outing, becoming just one of five Tigers to ever accomplish the feat. It was the first three-double outing since Ashley Fleming hit three against No. 13/12 Oregon (5/5/12).
- With her double to left field in the first inning, Wilmes extended her current hitting streak to eight games. She also increased her reached-base streak to 13 games, which stretches back to Feb. 21.
- For the third time this season, Gasper threw a complete game. It was her first time reaching the mark since Feb. 15 against Villanova, her only other time throwing 7.0 innings in her career.
- Sophomore 3B Kimberly Wert bombed her team-leading seventh home run of the year in the bottom of the fifth inning to stretch the lead out to four. She now has 19 RBI this season, the most on the team.
- Pinch-hitting in the bottom of the fourth, sophomore UTIL Kara Decker drove home her third run of the season. All three of her RBIs this season have come in pinch-hitting situations.
TURNING POINT
After three and a half innings of a back and forth game, the Tigers broke out in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, accumulating four runs and forming what would become an insurmountable lead.
After reaching base on an error to start off the scoring sequence, freshman OF Danie Garrison, pinch running for Wert, would end up scoring on Decker's double to left field. Soon after, Wilmes would double to right field, allowing redshirt freshman OF Tajiah Ellison to score, making it a 5-3 Mizzou lead. In the fifth, Wert's monster home run would score two, stretching the lead out to 7-3, where it would stay.
QUOTEABLES
"The key today was swinging at good pitches," Coach Anderson said. "For Brooke to hit the double off the wall right at the start the way she did, it set the tone. We really adjusted well to every one of their pitchers, and battled when Georgia fought back. Heck of a win for us today."
