Tigers only one week away from 2019 season opener
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Ready for his third season at the helm of Mizzou Baseball, head coach Steve Bieser and the Tigers open their 2019 campaign in exactly one week. Mizzou will visit North Florida for a season-opening three-game series (Feb. 15-17), followed by five additional games in The Sunshine State (Feb. 19-24).
With the final week of preparation underway, catch up on the latest rumblings on all things Tigers Baseball.
- Due to cold weather conditions in Mid-Missouri, the team has regularly practiced indoors at the Devine Pavilion.
- Mizzou opened Friday's practice with a slew of stations for fielders, hitters and pitchers. This included abbreviated live batting practice, situational fielding drills and pitcher's fielding practice.
- Following the extended warm-up, the squad dispersed into Black & Gold teams for a live scrimmage. On the bump, sophomore RHP Trey Dillard got the nod for Team Black, while senior LHP Tyler LaPlante got the ball for Team Gold.
- With roles varying throughout the official practice season, the Tigers depth chart has typically been the following:
- C – sophomore Chad McDaniel, freshman Tre Morris, senior Trevor Mallett
- 1B – junior Kameron Misner, senior Tony Ortiz, freshman Cameron Swanger, junior Peter Zimmerman
- 2B – sophomore Mark Vierling, senior Paul Gomez, Morris
- SS – junior Chris Cornelius, Gomez
- 3B – junior Austin James, freshman Luke Mann, Swanger
- LF – senior Zach Hanna, sophomore Alex Peterson
- CF – Misner, Clayton Peterson
- RF – C. Peterson, senior Connor Brumfield
- Sophomore transfer Thomas Broyles laced a base hit off the hard-throwing Dillard to highlight Team Gold's first turn through the lineup.
- Sophomore RHP Ian Bedell was first in relief for Team Black, inducing a pair of ground balls and a strikeout in his first inning of work.
- In Bedell's second frame, Morris roped a leadoff double to the right-center gap.
- Also seeing time on the mound throughout official practice this winter has been freshman RHP Tommy Springer, freshman RHP Seth Halvorsen, sophomore RHP Konnor Ash, sophomore RHP Luke Anderson, junior LHP Jacob Cantleberry, senior RHP Cameron Dulle, junior RHP Lukas Veinbergs, sophomore RHP Cameron Pferrer, freshman LHP Trae Robertson and senior RHP Jordan Gubelman.
