Emma Allen Fires Rounds of 69-70 to Stand in Fifth Individually
PEORIA, AZ. – The Mizzou women's golf team shot team rounds of 289 and 291 Sunday on day one at the Westbrook Invitational, and they stand in 11th place as a team through 36 holes of play. The Tigers are just five shots out of fourth place, and they'll look to move up the leaderboard Monday in the final round of play at the par-72, 6,252-yard Westbrook Village Golf Course.
Senior Emma Allen (Southampton, England) had an outstanding 36 holes Sunday, as she fired rounds of 69 and 70 for a combined five-under par that left her tied for fifth place individually. Allen will enter Monday's final round just two shots off the lead, as she is in the hunt for her second collegiate individual title. Her bogey-free first round included three birdies, and she followed in the afternoon tour with three birdies offset by just one bogey.
"Emma was really consistent today, and she had quite a few birdie opportunities that she just barely missed, or she could have posted a huge low number," said Head Coach Stephanie Priesmeyer. "She was really pleased with her play today," Priesmeyer said.
Senior Cayce Hendrickson (Benton, Ky.) and freshman Keagan Dunn (Braselton, Ga.) shot identical rounds of 73-74 Sunday to stand tied for 48th individually. Hendrickson's first round was fairly routine, with 15 pars, one birdie and two bogeys, while her afternoon round featured three birdies and five bogeys and included a chip-in on her final hole of the day on the par-three fourth hole for a birdie.
Dunn flashed her scoring potential, as she carded eight birdies and her first collegiate eagle to lead the team. Her scoring average of 4.25 on par fives leads the field after day one, and her eagle on the 469-yard par-five 14th hole was one of just four eagles by the field on Sunday.
"Cayce was very steady all day for us, and her short game was tremendous in the afternoon round when her approach shots were off," said Priesmeyer. "Keagan obviously showed what she's capable of with her scoring, and she wasn't that far away from being under par. She learned a lot from last week and I was really pleased with how she improved her course management," Priesmeyer said.
Junior Jessica Yuen (Bolingbrook, Ill.) is tied for 56th after day one after shooting a pair of two-over 74s. Yuen stood even par through her first 17 holes on round one, before a double-bogey on her final hole left her at two over. She carded four birdies overall, including three in the first round.
"Jess has a wrist that is bothering her, so she's fighting through it, and her ball striking was much improved from last week, so that was a good turning point for her," said Priesmeyer. "She gave herself quite a few birdie chances today, but just couldn't convert like she's used to," said Priesmeyer.
Senior Amanda Kim (O'Fallon, Mo.) opened with a five-over 77, but rallied to shoot a one-over 73 in the afternoon, and stands tied for 70th overall entering Monday's final round.
"Amanda is battling pain in her hip and shoulders so a long day like this was challenging, but she fought hard and it was great to see her improve on the second round," said Priesmeyer.
