ATHENS, Ga. – Senior Mikel Schreuders (Oranjestad, Aruba) set a new Southeastern Conference meet record and the Mizzou men's and women's swimming and diving teams posted three top three finishes and set three school records to open action at the 2019 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships Tuesday in Athens, Ga.
The Tiger men sit third with 146 points, while the women are ninth with 113 points with four days of competition remaining.
KEY PERFORMANCES
Schreuders led off the men's 800 free relay team with a 1:31.61 200 free, a time that broke Florida's Conor Dwyer's old mark of 1:31.73, and was over a full second off Schreuder's lifetime best.
The 1:31.61 from Schreuders helped the men earn a second-place finish in the 800 free relay, as he teamed with junior Giovanny Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshmen Jack Dahlgren (Victoria, Minn.) and Kyle Leach (Colorado Springs, Colo.) to post a school record time of 6:11.77. It was the second-consecutive runner-up finish in the 800 free relay for the Tiger men at the Championships.
The women's 200 medley relay also claimed runner-up honors to earn the women's program its highest-ever relay finish at the SEC Championships. The quartet of junior Haley Hynes (Lee's Summit, Mo.), freshman Kayla Jones (St. Charles, Ill.), senior Annie Ochitwa (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and sophomore Sarah Thompson (Collierville, Tenn.) clocked a school record and notched an NCAA 'A' cut with a 1:35.62 to edge out Florida for second.
Individually, senior Kyle Goodwin (Aurora, Colo.) notched a podium finish as he took third in the men's 1-meter competition. The senior turned it on for finals, going a season-high 392.35 in the evening session, up over 40 points from his prelims tally. His placement was also an SEC Championships best, bettering his sixth-place finish on 1-meter a year ago.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Interim Head Coach Andrew Grevers
"I'm really pleased with the effort and the performance, but even more so with the energy from the team in the stands really making our presence felt. Our commitment to the process of this meet is really shining through right now. It was really a great session."
Senior Mikel Schreuders
"We've all been preparing really well for this meet. I wanted to try and get the biggest lead that we could because we had strong opponents in that field. I just went for it and tried to do as much as I could. I didn't even know I broke the record, but after hearing it on the podium, it was awesome. We've all been working so hard, it shows that it pays off. But we still have work to do."
