Mizzou women finish 20th overall in a loaded field of ranked opponents
MADISON, Wis. – Mizzou Cross Country concluded the 2019 regular season on Friday, competing in the Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin. With Mizzou matched up with more than 30 of the top college teams from around the nation, junior Sarah Chapman (Maidenhead, England) paced the women for the fourth straight meet, leading the squad to a 20th place team finish in the Women's A race.
NOTABLE TIGERS
Redshirt senior Thomas George (Gloucester, England) led the Mizzou men's team in the Men's A Race by finishing 73rd overall and logging a time of 24:27.2, his best 8k mark of the season. While Chapman has consistently paced the Tiger women, George has solidified his spot as the leader of the men's squad, leading the team in all four of its races during the 2019 campaign.
On the women's side, after redshirt senior Sophia Racette (St. Louis, Mo.) led the Tigers in the Women's B race, Chapman put together a strong performance in the Women's A race. Chapman finished 52nd out of 243 participants with a time of 20:47.9 in one of the most competitive women's races in the nation. Meanwhile, a pack of Tiger runners led by senior Jordyn Kleve (Urbandale, Iowa) contributed behind Chapman. Kleve posted a season-best time of 21:18.1 and joined Chapman in the top half of finishers in the loaded field.
QUOTES
Mizzou Head Coach Marc Burns… "Great effort today by our women! This is a tough race to perform well at the first time you come here and the women competed hard all the way to the finish line. We beat three teams ranked in the top 30 and three more receiving votes. There is room to grow for sure but we accomplished some good things today. The men's team struggled today but we will use it as a learning experience and grow from it. We have two weeks to get ready to battle hard in Lexington at the SEC Champs."
UP NEXT
Mizzou transitions to postseason competition as the Tigers will travel to Lexington, Kentucky for the SEC Championships on Friday, November 1. The Tigers will then Mcompete in the NCAA Regional meet on Friday, November 15 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
