COLUMBIA, Mo. – Former Mizzou Track & Field athlete Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) logged an impressive second-place finish in the 5000m preliminary round of the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar on Wednesday. With a final time of 14:52.41, she set a new personal best by more than nine seconds and recorded the second-fastest time between both heats.

She continues to hold the fastest 5000m time clocked by a U.S. female in 2019, breaking her previous personal record of 15:01.63 that was set at the Sunset Tour on July 9. Her time on Wednesday was the seventh-fastest 5000m time in American history, moving her in front of Jennifer Rhines who ran a 14:54.29 in Norway on June 6, 2008.

Schweizer will compete in the 5000m finals on Saturday, October 5 at 1:25 PM CT. NBC Sports will show the race on TV and will also have online streaming coverage starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

She is one of only two Americans to qualify for the finals, the second being Elinor Purrier. Purrier was an 11-time All-American at the University of New Hampshire and transitioned to professional competition after graduating in 2018.
