COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Women's Basketball senior guard Sophie Cunningham (Columbia, Mo.) is one of 15 athletes named to the Wooden Award National Ballot, as announced by ESPN. The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2019 John R. Wooden Award Women's Player of the Year, presented by Wendy's, the nation's top individual honor. The winner of the Wooden Award will be announced April 12 at the College Basketball Awards.
Last season, Cunningham was named to the Wooden Award preseason top 30, midseason top 25, late season top 20 and the national ballot.
The Tiger senior has helped lead Mizzou to its first conference tournament semifinal appearance since 1994 at this year's SEC Tournament, as the Tigers have beaten Florida (March 8) and Kentucky (March 9) in Greenville, S.C. Cunningham scored 29 points and moved into second-place on Mizzou's all-time scoring list in the Tigers' 70-68 overtime win over the Wildcats in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Cunningham was recently named to her third straight All-SEC First Team by the league's coaches, becoming the first player in program history to earn All-Conference First Team honors in three consecutive seasons. In addition, Cunningham was named to the All-SEC First Team by the Associated Press for the second straight season.
The SEC's active career scoring leader with 2,124 points, Cunningham is currently averaging 17.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. Her 77 three-pointers rank fifth in a single season in program history.
Cunningham finished the regular season ranked fourth in the SEC in scoring (17.3 ppg), third in three-point percentage (40.7), third in three-pointers per game (2.3) and third in free throw percentage (81.8). In conference play, she led the SEC in three-point shooting (46.5 percent) and threes per game (2.9). Cunningham has reached 20 points in 14 games this season, including nine times against SEC opponents, and 30 points twice. Mizzou is 13-1 when she scores 20+, and 2-0 when she reaches 30 points.
The Tiger senior is one of three Mizzou players to score 2,000 career points. Among program records, Cunningham ranks first in free throws made (520), second in scoring (2,124), second in three-pointers made (230), third in three-point percentage (40.5), third in free throw percentage (83.5), fourth in points per game (16.9) and fourth in assists (384).
Cunningham and Mizzou will face No. 5 Mississippi State in the SEC Tournament semifinals on Saturday. Tipoff from Bon Secours Wellness Arena is set for 4:00 p.m. CT on ESPN U.
