Two Late Birdies Lead to One-Over 72 and Tie for Second in Sectional Qualifying
HOMEWOOD, IL – University of Missouri Women's Golf standout Jessica Yuen (Bolingbrook, Ill.) earned a spot in the 2018 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, after shooting a one-over par 72 today in sectional qualifying at Calumet Country Club in Homewood, Ill. Yuen tied for second overall, three shots off the lead, and earned one of the four spots that advance to the Championship, to be held Aug. 6-12 at the Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs, Tenn.
Yuen closed with birdies on the par-four 16th and the par-five 18th holes to move up the leaderboard and secure her spot. Yuen's finish left her with an even-par 35 on the back nine, which followed a one-over par 37 on the front side. The 2018 NCAA Championships qualifier is the first Tiger to qualify for the U.S. Women's Amateur since Alina Rogers in 2014. Rogers shot rounds of 75 and 76 that year in stroke play, and missed on advancing to the match play portion of the championship by just three shots.
This year, Yuen becomes one of just 156 players of a record 1,468 entrants to advance through 23 sectional qualifying sites. The Championship format will include two 18-hole rounds of stroke play for all competitors (Aug. 6-7), with the top 64 finishers advancing to a match play bracket (Aug. 8-12). Match play will feature 18 hole matches from the round of 64 through the semifinals, until the championship on Aug. 12th, which will be contested over 36 holes.
FS1 will be televising the match play portion of the 2018 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship from Aug. 8-12, with times to be announced later.
